Something strange is going on in Maui - malahini - 01-02-2022

Edit: So apparently it's probably 66% two dose a 12% increase from June. Booster rate is 21%. He's still banning most people from eating out and going to the gym.

Only like 66% have single dose, and 55% double dose vax on Maui... and Hawaii has an overall booster rate of 25%.

Do the math. Something really doesn't add up. This is just absolutely bizarre.

Not trying to start more arguments about COVID policy, but just want theories as to why Victorino would do something that would seem so obviously likely to make people angry there.

I don't see where the article supports your numbers other than the 25% booster rate for the state. Can you, like, clarify?

Their vaccination rate has barely budged since June, so the six month thing doesn't really matter.

He's basically banning 75%+ of the population from eating out etc.

OK thanks, now at least I understand where the 66% number comes from.  I'm not so sure about the rest of the stats. I saw on flatline for Maui regarding vaccinations which suggests to me the data are not just getting out there or they are but not to the right place. I do not believe there's no change in vaccination rates on Maui in six months. That's just not realistic.

According to state health officials, 55% of Maui residents are fully vaccinated.

And you were saying?

RE: Something strange is going on in Maui - My 2 cents - 01-02-2022

What’s interesting to me is that we have 4 Mayors and 3 different approaches.

Victorino/Maui - Booster mandates

Roth/BI - Increased restrictions on gathering size

Blangiardi/Honolulu - Recommendations, no new restrictions

Kawakami/Kauai - Same as Blangiardi

Subject to change, if they haven’t already.

Hawaii is informally conducting it’s own study.  It shouldn’t take too long for us to start seeing some trends and/or results from the different approaches.

RE: Something strange is going on in Maui - malahini - 01-02-2022

Let's try to focus on what the hell is going on in Victorino's head please. Too many confounding factors, especially with the extreme population density on Oahu vs BI for example. Point of this thread isn't another policy debate.

Isn't Victorino up for reelection soon? Will he not face backlash for locking down 75% of the population basically?

"Point of this thread isn't another policy debate."

"Will he not face backlash for locking down 75% of the population basically?"

Certainly there are many strange things happening on Maui at any given time. This doesn't qualify.

The dashboard says that 66% of entire Maui population is fully vaccinated by the current definition. Including kids, that's a high percentage of adults. So, this means that they will need to get another shot for participating in those activities. Seems like a logical move in order to stem virus spread, keeping people at work and out of the hospital. Also an incentive for tourists to get the booster. The executive director of the American Public Health Association says that a from a medical perspective, the booster dose “is really what we should be thinking of as fully vaccinated.”

It shouldn't be assumed that persons who were previously considered "fully vaccinated" will resent getting another one. I didn't!

This is not strange. It was expected. This looks like a trial run to see how the reaction is before statewide rollout.
