Revitalize pohoiki event? - Ccat - 07-15-2022

Did anybody go to the recent “revitalize pohoiki” event?  I have seen news articles, but can’t find much about this final “plan” they supposedly announced there.

(I couldn’t go.)

I think rebuilding pohoiki, etc is *critical* to Puna.   Who is paying, how much, timelines, etc.

Was this “More smoke” or is this finally real (as in really coming real soon)?

Thanks,

Ccat

I hope they can get it re-opened too. It was my daily swim spot for years and nothing better than a swim on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

The $3 million plan only includes the area around the existing gravel parking lot at the entrance, where three pavilions, an administration building, paved parking lot, picnic tables, and handicap-accessible walkway are to be constructed.  The ponds and ocean were not part of the study area.

The kicker is the note in the lower corner that says:  "This plan is subject to prior restoration of municipal water service to the park."  And when was it announced that the water line would be revitalized?  Possibly by the fourth quarter of 2025.

At least this one is on the calendar. Other County roads have been abandoned with no hope of restoration at this point.

An administration building? Wow, what will they be administering?

There's a cool "Recovery Office" in the County building where they stand around on fancy computers not actually fixing anything. Probably nice salaries for whatever it is that large full time staff is doing.

And now they are proposing to reduce the buyout amount per property with the brilliant and not surprising idea of putting the surplus into the general fund.

For those keeping score at home - 1 road has been restored, 5 people have received payment for their property and meanwhile the Hawaii County bureaucracy rolls merrily along.

Sometimes I wish my name had more vowels in it so I could participate in all this graft.
