Any water well owners? - StillHope - 06-15-2008 Aloha, everyone! I could use some advice in water well risk assessment. Let me explain why I am not looking for lucky HPP residents with wells-they have water guaranteed. I am looking for the less lucky Puna residents who went trough or thinking of going trough taking chances with water well. I already paid for the permit. You are probably wondering why 1) - I don't ask the contractor; 2) -I haven't ask the PW before I paid for the permit. 1.I did ask the contractor and hoping some day to get the answer. At this point I am # 21 in line (20 wells to drill before me) and as you imagine, the contractor is very busy. And it's always helpful to have a customer's opinion. 2.Before applying for the permit I was told that unlike the other companies,my contractor guarantee water. The extra fuel surcharge was mentioned if they were stuck drilling. I recently received a contract with"no water guarantee". On my understandable question I got the answer that yes, water is guaranteed, but only in HPP. As one of the PW member says, the "devil is in detail". Basically I tend to believe that it was an honest mistake. The contractor ,probably, forgot that I am in Sea View. I heard only good things about the contractor and willing to take my chance. All I need is the risk estimate. It's like if you are going to a surgery, usually a doctor tells you what is the risk %. In my subdivision it's only one or two wells. The castle owner has one. I doubt that he/she is a PW member, otherwise would reply on the compliments about the design. I know most of you have catchment.Pam has a good one for $6K. My well estimate is $12K.But the thing is that that is the price I am going to pay whether I have water or not. Don't get me wrong - the hard job of drilling needs to be paid.No question about that. I just need to know the possible risk. There is some land sonar type equipment, but I don't hear anyone using it on BI. Well,I am standing on the edge off the cliff with a parachute with "no opening guaranteed". Any jumpers out there? RE: Any water well owners? - John S. Rabi - 06-15-2008 Well, I don't know much about well drilling, but only God can guarantee you water (if you are religious.) Since there are wells in your subdivision it means there is a water plateau there, so your chances probably are better than in a subdivision with no existing wells. Aloha, John S. RE: Any water well owners? - StillHope - 06-15-2008 quote:John,I know that. But an experienced doctor can estimate the risk of the surgery. I was asking about a risk assessment (based on the well drilling history in Puna),not a guarantee of the water. That's why I highlighted the important points. Let's say, 100 wells has been drilled and 9 of the drilling didn't succeeed. So it will be about 10% risk. The only person I talked had the property with 15 feet elevation - (vs 125 of mine) and in HPP.Would love to hear from the other well owners. RE: Any water well owners? - aline - 06-15-2008 You need to have more than just water. They also measure the flow rate of how many gallons per minute or whatever and what about testing the quality of the water? The lots in Seaview are a lot smaller than HPP and houses are closer which means cesspools from the past are also closer to your water supply.I'm not sure but I think Seaview now has to have septic tanks but there are a lot of homes there still on cesspool RE: Any water well owners? - Guest - 06-15-2008 quote: Nothing like drinking someone else's sewage. [xx(] ------- Lower your expectations and be ready for anything. RE: Any water well owners? - JWFITZ - 06-15-2008 Put in catchment. You'd be nuts not to with the rainfall we have and the complete irresponsibility shown by cesspool and even septic installations--let alone dead cars leaking oil into the ground, ag run-off and the rest. There are nicer ways to put up a catchment system than what you often see, and large tanks can be built on site with some help. Thats what I've done and would do it no other way. RE: Any water well owners? - StillHope - 06-15-2008 quote:Aline, thanks for the input. My lot is a couple blocks from the ocean and only septic system is permitted over there. But that was not my question. I was wondering how many failed projects is out there (if any). I don't know where the 20 wells before me will be drilled.Probably,in HPP... RE: Any water well owners? - Kapohocat - 06-15-2008 quote: Believe it or not, there are places in Seaview where the lot can still have a cesspool. An example is the yurt uphill that was for sale - the one the girl owned - not the two guys. There is a legal cesspool there put in only 3 years ago. Kapohocat,I was aware of some cesspools in Sea View. Whether or not to have a well-is not a question.I was following the discussion on the catchments for a long time.I know cons and pros. My project is on hold because of this unexpected "detail"-HPP only. I am willing to take a chance if it's like at least 80-90% of success. Without knowing what to expect at all it is gambling. And I don't gamble. I think I should call DLNR,where the well permits are being issued. If I find the information,I'll let you know. Thank you, everyone for your time. |
