Farmers market(s) - Cindy V - 03-01-2006

Aloha all,

I know there are many farmer's markets happening, but what is the opinion of this forum for the "best" I'm looking for a good assortment of fruits and veggis and whatever else?

The Hilo farmers market is the best for selection, bar none. However, I enjoy the Makuu Market too, it's more eclectic!

Sorry guys, I sometimes type faster than think. Must be age. Smile Makuu Market is on the highway between Keaau and Pahoa, just past HPP. Open Saturdays and Sundays but there are more vendors on Sundays. The Hilo Farmers Market is right on the Bayfront. Officially open Wednesdays and Saturdays but it seems there are some wendors there on other days too.

Hilo has been trying to get the market people to come in on Sundays so that the tourist coming off the boat has something to look at and buy! It seems it would be better if the boat just came in on Saturday! I agree with John, as to the differences in the two markets. Cathie and I enjoy going to the Makuu market and getting tamale plates for $5.00 each. They are ono!

RE: Farmers market(s) - Howard - 03-01-2006

We've found that the relative quality of produce in the two markets varies; some weeks it is better in Hilo and other weeks it is better in Makuu. Makuu has a big advantage in other areas, however - we like the beef ribs at the barbecue stand at the south end of the market at Makuu, and last week we got a great chocolate cake at a stand called Nena's Breads 'n' More. Both of these vendors are there on Sundays only.

The Keaau market is a favorite of mine...smaller but really good quality and prices are reasonable.

Howard, you mentioned 2 of my favorite vendors at the Makuu Market. I love Nena's coconut cake (just get there early because it sells out fast when she has it)
