Just for the record, that action does not mean a strike is imminent. Union leadership use strike votes as a bargaining tool.
We'll hear much more about this before a strike becomes a reality.
BTW, for those who post on this site complaining about the low pay for the masses in Hawaii, it is not education but union jobs that are the single most effective way of earning a living wage on the Big Island. And even those are waning.
Stephens Media, owner of the Tribune-Herald, West Hawaii Today, North Hawaii News, Big Island Weekly, Kamaaina Shopper, et al is one of the most virulently anti-union/anti-employee media outlets in the U.S. The Tribune-Herald is Stephens ONLY union newspaper and they have continued Don Reynolds' antiunion campaign against employees, refusing to bargain contracts in good faith for YEARS on end (and this fact is confirmed by federal officials on more than one occasion).
Stephens is now successful in helping shut down Hawaii Island Journal which they unsuccessfully tried to buy on numerous times over the years. Don't expect BIW's Kristine Kubat's independent voice to be heard for long now that HIJ is ceasing publication. And don't expect a free BIW for long either. The only reason they don't shut down the Trib (although it's becoming more and more irrelevant to the community) is that it brings in too much advertising $$$ for them to pass up, especially in an election year (a FREE TEAT every other year!)
For full disclosure, I worked as a reporter and editor at the Tribune-Herald for 20 years, the last 10 as union shop steward. I also worked for the Dept. of Education for 8 years and was a member of the HSTA. Not all unions are created equal; there are good ones and not-so-good ones. no, no, I know. I just love how all the aunties are at Walmart for their rice and TP. I mean I see how those two are connected ... ha ha ..... but still....
