Animal importation question - sweetwater - 06-23-2008 Has anyone on the forum flown directly into Kona with pets?? I thought the regulations for bringing pets was insane already and then found out what it will take to make a direct flight to the Big Island. They recommend that we fly into Honolulu first and then over to Kona. Has anyone done this? I'm concerned about the extra costs as well as whether the Inter-Island planes will accept the dogs?? Linda Bowman RE: Animal importation question - mella l - 06-24-2008 Recently HADave and Mz. P flew their pooch direct into Kona. Vet came to airport and check the pooch and the paper work and off they went! Just be sure all your paper work is order, chipping blood tests, application, health certificate, to satisy whatever airline you are using, and the airport vet, your 120 day quarantine, ect, set up with the vet in Kona and you're good to go! One tip if you arrive on a Sat or Sun, vet charges more naturally. So try coming mid week. Good luck! mella l RE: Animal importation question - macuu222 - 06-24-2008 Its been awhile...but from what I recall they take the animals at the Kona airport (or any other direct flight airport) and fly them to Honolulu where they are kept in quarantine for up to 120 days unless arrangements are made in advance so that they can be held on the Big Island facility. But I believe they still have to be processed through Honolulu before they can do their time on an island closer to where you live and can visit your annimal daily. I believe they charge $75.00 one way for an animal and yes hawaiian does transport animals RE: Animal importation question - gtill - 06-24-2008 That was before, today all you need to do is bribe a vet on the mainland and bring anything in!(till the 1st rabies outbreak). RE: Animal importation question - keaaukizzau - 06-24-2008 I don't know about the Kona route, but I can tell you about my trip through Honolulu if it makes your decision easier... Made the trip with - 3 dogs and a cat - a few years ago. We flew through Honolulu and I was so worried about it, making connections and all, but it went wonderfully. We had done all of the pre-flight vet visits back on the mainland and everything was set up so we didn't have to deal with quarantine. In Honolulu, we met the animals at the quarantine station (a short walk from the gate) and after just a few minutes, they were free to go. Used a luggage cart to haul their carriers back to the interisland gate, and were there so far ahead of schedule that we caught an earlier flight. The animals were pretty stressed and hot, we were glad we could cut off some of the wait time at the airport. Not sure about which airline we flew, I remember making a bunch of calls ahead of time to see what the different regulations were. And It was kind of stinky that we had to pay for the animals on the mainland to Honolulu leg and then paid another fee for them on the interisland leg. Not cheap, for sure. Hope it goes well for you, Kelli RE: Animal importation question - idiglava - 06-24-2008 Here's the link for Direct Release on Neighbor Islands from the HDOA website. http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/Checklist%20for%20%20Kona,%20Kahului%20-%20Lihue%20Airports%2005%2007.pdf RE: Animal importation question - pslamont - 06-24-2008 Everyone stop giving misinformation. Go to the direct release site. You can not "bribe" a mainland vet; the rabies paperwork is only acceptable in Hawaii from ONE lab in (I think it is) Kansas. It is ironclad. Don't play with all this or you get in a mess. The rules are easy to follow. Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! RE: Animal importation question - mella l - 06-24-2008 Yes the Rabies, Fabin test is done in Kansas at a university, the only site. Direct release is the way to go and avoid Honolulu if you can, and go direct to Kona less tauma on you and your pets. mella l RE: Animal importation question - DanielP - 06-24-2008 I have flown my dog back and forth 3 times. Last year I was able to fly him into Kona. A GREAT improvement. A little more preparation ahead of time, but way well worth it. Contact Hawaii Dept. of Ag, they will tell you what to do. It takes a couple of extra weeks in the prep time. The link above by Idi...lays the process out well Dan RE: Animal importation question - lostboystoy - 06-24-2008 Since I am in the process now, we just got our paper work for our blood work. The test is FAVN-OIE Rabies antibody titer for export animals, get your micro chipping done first, 2 rabies shots 90 days apart, then draw blood send it to KSU rabies laboratory 1800 Denison Avenue Mosier Hall Manhattan KS 66506-5600, We can come over oct 12, you must wait 120 days until the stamped date on the labs end. Now for the Macaw, Thats actually going to be easier. setting my soul free.... |
