Ship on horizon out from Kaloli Point - Chas - 10-13-2023
Any thoughts? Looks like it might be a container ship. It's been there for a couple of days. Early arrival, waiting to dock?

There is two ships in that area - an oil tanker and a LPG tanker.

That site used to be a lot more useful but now you have to pay for access to stuff that used to be free.

Thanks for that great site Aaron. Kind of like Flightradar24 for the ocean!
It was just kind of strange, as I've never seen a ship just sit there like that. I was wondering if it was disabled or something. The ship is gone now. I never saw if a tug or something came out to get it or it just left on it's own.

When I clicked on the "Penelope", now docked in Hilo, it brought up a picture of the ship. Looks like this might have been it.
Edit: It showed the route of the ship too. Yes, this had to be the one.

Maybe they were waiting for the offloading tanks to have enough space for their cargo?
Sometimes oil tankers will deliberately stay at sea if the owners of the cargo believe the price is about to go up. Though I'm not aware of any refining on the BI so that seems unlikely in this case. I remember reading that during The COVID glut there was 160 million barrels being stored on the ocean this way.
