Alright, this is my first post on this forum....I mean I say it's the first but probably won't be because I'll probably delete it and make another one if I don't like it. Okay, why am I doing this? Well right now is the time I am about to leave mainland America. I arrive in Hilo in about a week and my husband and I will be living in Puna. We want to live there and maybe buy some cheap land and start building our own house somewhere in Nanawale, Eden Roc or some other subdivision. I have a baby on the way and am the mother of a soon-to-be eighth grader who will be joining us when he comes back from summer vacation with his grandparents. I have been looking at posts in different places and I'm not sure what school I should be looking into. We can't afford private schools but we hear the charter school is the way to go. I'm not too impressed with the facilities of most schools that I saw online. Most of them don't even have a website. I was told about one school that was actually entirely on solar power and I think that's neat but I don't know anything about the education in these schools. So I would love to hear y'all's recommendations. And I really hope I don't get replies like "leave your kid on the mainland", people on that city data forum say that a lot. I have no idea why they are so negative about Hawaii. [:o)]

This is also part of the United States even though it sometimes doesn't quite seem like it.
It is definitely different than the rest of the other states, although I'm sure most states are all different in their own way. Hmm, considering we are not part of the American continent, I wonder if Hawaii truly is part of America? We are part of the United States but maybe we miss out on the America part? Well, that's just semantics anyway.Which part of the mainland are you coming from? Why did you choose to move to Hawaii? (Just curious)
Many people move to Hawaii and rent a place for six months to a year before deciding where they would like to live since we have so many different areas to choose from and each one is different. It can take awhile to find the one you feel comfortable with and we also have two separate sides to the island so depending on where your employment is will have a big effect on your choice as well.

I suggest that you use the great tool on this website and use the search button just by entering "schools"..you should have lots of info there from past post..i'm sure one of them will be mine, for I too was looking for a good school for my son. We were very lucky to get him in a charter school HAAS (Hawaiian Academy of Arts & Science) you might want to check them out. Even though I know there is a limit to the amount of children they can take.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be coming from Los Angeles. I have been in LA for a long time but I'm from Texas. I hope I really like Hawaii as much as DH does. We intend to build a house there, even though I keep hearing that construction materials are a lot more expensive.

HAAS & Connections Charter Schools are the two I hear the most positive about from both parents & teachers...
In Puna there are Keaau Middle School & Pahoa Intermediate. HAAS is in Pahoa (Connections is in Hilo with bus service into Puna)

Hi Maggie and welcome to the PW. Haven't heard much about little league, however soccer is REALLY big here! If I had children, I think outrigger canoes would be cool when the children reach an appropriate age, a healthy sport, athletic and cultural all in one!

Little League is also BIG here (Hilo has made it to nationals & international comp - 2003 Senior League World Champs!)
Main fields I know of are Pahoa & Shipman Field in Keaau
