This sounds much more interesting to me than speculative sci fi. But I canʻt find it at the library yet.

It's in Libby if you do ebooks - 13 week wait though so may want to get in line now. The prologue and first few chapters are available to sample in the meantime.
His previous book Daughters of Fire also sounds worthwhile IMHO, also has a long wait in Libby (so seems popular), with several physical copies are available at the Keaau / Pahoa / Mountain View / Hilo libraries if interested.

Sure, someone who spent decades on both Mauna Kea and Kilauea, why would their perspective be of interest? Best way to learn new things is to only read those authors I already agree with, amirite?
It's almost like there's an old aphorism about books and covers and what not to do...
