Ever met a punawebber? - HAWAIIFEL - 09-04-2024

My 3rd encounter actually. I knew the 2. They are my  “neighbors” from different corner and I know their PW names,  but this one is extraordinary.

Sometime in January I met a punawebber by chance. This couple was in line in the counter  at HNL airport. The guy is in his late 50s,  I was behind him and I saw him scrolling punaweb.  Oh! Thanks to my farsighted eyes. Haha!

I decided to tap his shoulder and politely ask whats his punaweb name.  He looked at me astonishingly and said… Oh, are you???! Haha

Long story short, we ended up having a good conversation while waiting for our respective flights. They were heading to Narita, Japan, I was heading to Incheon, S. Korea.

He shared to me how punaweb was like around 15 yrs ago or so. It was fun, pedagogic, informative, no Kens and Karens back then. Nobody tried to be omniscient, high and mighty.  Until, it was infiltrated by some jellyfish--- end of glory days (verbatim).

So there,  I still didnt knew his or their punaweb name but I told them that one day, Il be back here and share this encounter to  everyone. To your pulchritudinous wife, thank you for that wonderful  time. If you guys are here,  know that it was me. That shawty 5' skinny, "red head" bearing XX chromosomes, haha!

Im still in and around SEA countries as of this writing for some external affairs. Life is beautiful away from the keyboard. Smile

Yes, several. Though it has become increasingly unlikely over the years. I don't think it has much to do with "punaweb" per se, but more about the changes in social media in general.

All stand-alone online forums are pretty much in the rearview mirror now, similar to how dial-up BBS systems were when the internet started become widely available. Social media platforms like FB allow any user to create their own online forum (FB groups) and likewise to participate in as many as they want. There are at least two FB groups for Orchidland, several for HPP, etc. Not to mention groups for Puna, Big Island, and the ever popular Big Island Thieves. Because social media generally identifies users as real people, there is less anonymity involved. It's kind of like meeting someone's online avatar of themselves, my wife is active on social media and posts a lot of pictures and anecdotes about our dogs, and we take our Belgian Malinois "Reaper" with us almost everywhere we go. Frequently "strangers" will come up to us and ask, "Is that Reaper?" because they recognize him from her photos before they recognize either one of us. (Also his tactipup collar with 1 inch letters that spell out REAPER is a giveaway).

Punaweb was Puna's social media site 15 years ago and it had a lot of activity, including group meetings and holiday gatherings. Times have changed. I'm not saying its better or worse, I'm just commenting on what I've observed.

I have not personally met any PWers but wouldn't be opposed in general, tho I am a pretty asocial/antisocial sort of ferret. I would quietly sit in the corner of the PW Bar & Grill and hope to avoid notice.

Having only been on PW since 2017 I know I don't know of the "good old days" on here, but other than the tiffs, spats, and kerfuffles betwixt some members, I enjoy it and have found it useful, informative, and entertaining. I don't use FB, X, Insta, or any of those.

I also surely do appreciate the old-school BB-type platforms; I was a long-time member of one out of New Orleans that had been around since the 1990's, but it has since gone the way of the dial-up modem dinosaur.

~Still looking for a pithy signature line... ;-)

Same thing he said. And he knew a lot of them back then but they’re not anymore socially active in pw. They’re just scrolling and reading.  As the old saying goes, “old habits, die hard”.  It’s fun to hear some of his encounter in pw.  I was really entertained. Too late. I wasn’t here 15 years ago. Haha.

Anyway, I hope my 2 BM bumped into your BM, too. I should start calling “Reaper” every time I see one when i get back. Hahah  I have my  old neighbor (also an inactive member of pw) taking care of them while im away. I am an absentee furparent most of the time due to the nature of the industry Im working with but I sent my monthly child support.. i mean.. dog support. LOL!

Punika… how do I say your name without being awkward? Hahaha

I was only here last year, so I don’t know much. But in that short span of time, I could only say, there are a few “dysfunctional” people here. Not sure if that is just an alter ego or that’s the real them but regardless….thats just my impression. Sorry but not sorry.

Ive always think that life before socmed was a real thing. Real people, real interactions. Those times that you can just smack in the face when you get mistreated and get away with it without having 911 involved. lol

Should we come together to get those "old" folks back? Those folks that aren’t offended by Slim Shady. That must be a lot of fun. Hahah!

Having been at a couple of pool and Christmas parties with a number of those old members present along with my now grown sons, I have to report that a fair number of those old-timers are no longer among the living. (I have actually been a member since 2008 but due to a severe bullying from 'ken" Rob allowed me a name change years ago. "ken, thankfully, has also passed from what I understand)

Why yes!

Waxing nostalgic of the “good ole” days of PunaWeb!

However, if being “thankful” that a former PunaWeb poster has died is any indication of what PunaWeb was, I’m glad that I did not join back then when the going was so good!

Not yet. I've been trying to be "omniscient, high and mighty"-no luck with that either.

There were a few bad apples, KathyH becoming one of them as well.

trying to be "omniscient, high and mighty"

Sometimes it seems like people are mighty high and think that they are omniscient.

I've met the head honcho and a few others. Most of the people are pretty cool most of the time.

Speaking of high and mighty....

Was this made for Puna or what?
