All things in moderation - My 2 cents - 09-08-2024 Rob was kind enough to share with us that after 20 years of being the sole moderator for Punaweb, the thrill is gone and he has other interests occupying his time. Understandable. It probably would have been easier to just close up shop, so I’m glad he found a way to keep it up and running. We all know how valuable Punaweb has been over the years, far beyond the entertainment it provides, as a source of information on local events. The bigger the event, the more valuable the information in this forum. So I want to thank Rob for all of that and bringing it up to this point, and I want to thank Moderator 2 for helping Rob take a well deserved break. One thing I’m curious about is how Punaweb operates financially. There are no ads or membership fees. I can’t even find a donate link to click on. I only recall Rob asking for donations once in the 8 years that I have been a member, but that was for another organization unrelated to Punaweb. Perhaps he gets grants? Certainly deserving. The bottom line is that it’s free to all of us. Until I learn otherwise, I’m going to assume that Moderator 2 is an unpaid position. Moderator 1 as well, for that matter. With that in mind, perhaps there are some ways that we can minimize their work load. Like behaving ourselves, but that one should be obvious. I hope we don’t abuse this forum to the point of losing it. RE: All things in moderation - TomK - 09-08-2024 I've asked Rob and Moderator 2 to back up the discoveries from the Mauna Kea thread because posting stuff there took much of my unpaid time. I would like to have it archived because I don't think PW will be alive for much longer. I've emailed Rob, who I know, by the way, but he's been silent, and I see Moderator 2 is doing his or her own thing and deleting posts with no explanation. TomK, did you see Moderator 2's post in the 'Ever met a punawebber?' thread? See below: (09-07-2024, 11:36 PM)Moderator 2 Wrote: It does seem like there were quite a number of posts that had nothing to do with the subject of the thread(s) yesterday. If in the future you notice your posts edited or placed in the witness protection program (i.e. gone, no forwarding address) it’s because they don’t discuss the topic or are simply argumentative. The deleted post(s) you noticed most likely fell into the off topic or argumentative category. Mahalo, My 2 Cents, for a thoughtful post. I agree! Unpaid time? Are you suggesting your contributions to an internet forum have some sort of relationship to the commercial value of your time? Damn, that's a new one to me. But then, what do I know, really? As to archiving a thread, I am sure, well suspect really, that the MyBB community would have something to say about that. But, I imagine saving a thread is pretty useless if you don't have MyBB set up to view the archive through. Of course you can install a copy on your own server and run a forum yourself. Is that what you imagine? Or maybe just a bunch of copy/paste? Screenshots? I suppose the real question is what do you want to do with the saved data? Just read it, remember the good ol' days while you sail off into the sunset? I thought you take screenshots of every post. You don't do that anymore? Or do you want to reuse it, ie you need an editable copy? Maybe you should round them up and publish a book.. then you could get paid for your unpaid time. Maybe get a real writer (Tom Peek? How about John Dvorak? Kevin Krisciunas? Although Kevin's a little dry.. and I seriously wonder if you would be able to work with John.. he was on Coast to Coast after all) to help you out. But regardless, if you do publish let us know.. I am sure many would love to read it all again.. especially if we can get signed copies! As to your prediction that PW is going the way of vaporware, what leads you to that conclusion? Do you imagine this forum is contingent upon your involvement to be relevant? Are you going away? Otherwise I don't see why you'd say that. Care to elaborate? RE: All things in moderation - Moderator 2 - 09-08-2024 So many questions, so little time. I’m not paid. I find Punaweb at its best continues to be a valuable source of information in our neck of the jungle. If there’s a lava flow, hurricane, or other time sensitive event, Punaweb and its members provide some of the best, if not the best source of local updates. Other threads such as the building forum, Mauna Kea Observatory Discovery thread, local political forum, gardening forum all continue to contribute valuable information. Punaweb is not always operating at its optimal level. Rob does not read each thread as often as he has in the past, and has asked me to assist in keeping things on track. I try my best to moderate as Rob would. Forum rules are simple, and I believe uniformly regulated. If at times it doesn’t seem that way it’s only because you are noticed, or not. As an example, if two cars are driving 80 miles an hour but only one gets a ticket, it’s because one drove past a cop. Explanations are not required. Most everyone here knows how to conduct themselves, but occasionally may need a reminder. Freedom to comment on what you want should not interfere with another member’s ability to read uncluttered posts in threads that are of interest to them. If a thread is filled with arguments between two individuals unrelated to the thread, everyone else shouldn’t be forced to wade through it. It’s as simple as that. RE: All things in moderation - kalianna - 09-08-2024 TomK: "...back up the discoveries from the Mauna Kea thread because posting stuff there took much of my unpaid time." Such hubris! Why donʻt you post these on your own website instead of relying on a little social media site to do it for you? |
