Weather Apps - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 12-05-2024

Google researchers published a paper today in Nature about their new AI weather forecasting model GenCast.  It’s tested even more accurate than the ECMWF model, which had been considered the best.

https://deepmind.google/discover/blog/gencast-predicts-weather-and-the-risks-of-extreme-conditions-with-sota-accuracy/

Hawaii has always been problematic with forecasts due to mountains, microclimates, etc.  I use the Apple Weather app, although many days it’s far from accurate.  Temperature and wind speeds are not too far off, but rainfall - when, where, and how much are not to be counted on.  Until Google GenCast gets an app (or if it gets an app) does anyone have a Hawaii forecast model they can rely on?

Punaweather.org (Harry Durgin still reports for it even tho he moved far far away to NY), and windy.com seem to both be pretty good.

Agreed. Also, Wunderground is pretty good at most things except rain amounts. When thereʻs heavy rain in the forecast I can usually multiply the amount they predict times four and come out with a pretty accurate total.

My significant ferret (not otter) added they also use Weather Underground (Wunderground) and Weather.com as well as the aforementioned 2 and averages out all the info. Kinda a weather geek; they. ;-p

Me too. For those who arenʻt weather geeks, enjoy this gorgeous weather while it lasts and batten down the hatches for next week.

enjoy this gorgeous weather

Good advice kalianna!
Check out the moon and Venus tonight in the west.
At 7:14 PM the International Space Station will rise in the northwest, pass brightly low in the southern sky, slightly above the moon and Venus around 7:19 PM.

Tomorrow night. Iʻm a sky-watching geek too. :-)

Try Ambient Weather, it uses private local weather stations and provides an accurate local forecast.

Thanks HOTPE, for the skywatching tips for tonight, and thanks, Obie, for the Ambient Weather link...another feather in the weather-cap. :-)

RE: Weather Apps - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 12-05-2024

For Thursday 12/5 the moon and Venus will still be near each other, but not as close as last night.
The space station will rise in the NW around 6:27 PM traveling to the SE.  The sky won’t be dark, but the ISS will be a bright -3.7 magnitude, so should be visible.
