Ladies only please... - maggieblanchett - 06-29-2008

Hi all, as I've mentioned before I'm 3 months preggers...do you ladies have an obgyn you'd recommend on the island?

My two friends just had babies and they both saw Ebsegawa in Hilo.

AT AL COST! Stay away from Dr. Lyn Lam!

RE: Ladies only please... - missydog1 - 06-30-2008

Hopefully the doctor Cat told you of is accepting patients. The practice that is open to new patients on the island is the exception, and has been for some time.

Because people who make recommendations may have a long relationship with their doctor, they may not realize the practice is only serving existing patients. Your first step is to find someone who's taking new patients, in other words, find your real choices, then pick the one who is best.

I seem to remember reading the good news that a few new doctors had opened practices recently, but their names didn't stick with me because by that point I had found someone.

It took me two months to find an ob-gyn in Hilo that would take a new patient, and I was not happy with the doctor, but I had to stick with him to get my annual checkups.

Wish you the best with this one; it is so important to have a good doctor you trust to care for your pregnancy.

dakine, Lyn Lam didn't used to be with the Waimea clinic did she?
When calling around, if you get a closed practice, ask if they know anyone who is open; that's what I had to do.

One hundred percent vote for the Waimea Women's Center. I live all the way in Mountain View and make the long trek every month out there, they are THAT worth it, I'm 9 months pregnant now, my due date is actually today.....any time now.. There are 2 Dr.s that practice there, you either see on of them or a midwife at each prenatal visit. You then have privelages to birth at North Hawaii Hospital that has an awesome birthing facility. My first birth was with Ebesugawa at Hilo hospital. I will never go that route again. After being a patient at Waimea, I was surprised to learn that 30 % of their patients come from Hilo side. That should tell you something..Smile Aloha, Angela

Hmmm... both of these women are new to the Big island in the last 36 months so no long relationship. I was just offering what I knew about baby doctors. SB & I try to stay really really really far away from ever thinking of babies at this poitn in our lives ... unless one of the kids has them!! ha ha .... I offered a name specifically because they both got in to see him. But I think anything that begins with "Women's Center" is probably a much better group for women's health!

Whoooaa... hold the phone here! You're coming to Hawaii and you're pregnant? Wow, there's no better way to embrace the Hawaiian culture than using the timeless form of birthing known as the "Hawaiian Birthing Stone". Yeah.. I know it said "ladies only" but hey I'm just trying to help another punawebber asimilate. Here's a link.. I think they had some form of epidural too.. Although...

OK, before you ladies all get your hopes up.. The only one of these little jewels I've seen was on Moloka'i. I'm sure Damon can tell you if there's one around Esat Hawaii..

Blessings,
dave

Another big big vote for Dr Ebesugawa. To me, it seemed like he was working way too much, and his staff told me it was because he had trouble turning away patients. But, since then another Hilo ob-gyn has shut up shop, so I don't know whether he still takes everybody.

I am no stranger to long hours, night calls etc. but the kind of schedule he seemed to keep was just frightening. I heard other women complain about having to wait too long for an apointment, and yes, I have waited in the waiting room 2+ hours for my turn. But what are you going to do? When the babies have to come, they come. You either turn away patients or the patients you have must wait longer. There's no other solution when good doctors are so few.

What should worry you even more is lining up a paediatrician for the baby. You should start working on that right away.
