black or gray(not red) driveway gravel? - Ccat - 02-26-2025

I need to regravel my driveway.  I dont want the red cinder that I am seeing lots of people use.  It stains.

Can you get gray or black driveway gravel these days, from where?

Thanks,

Ccat

I've added some stuff to my original post from this thread you might find helpful:

I used 1 1/2 inch clean drain rock from Sanfords. Ask for Ross as a driver and he'll spread it for you. He may even drive over it a couple of times if you're nice. Drive over it as much as you can yourself. Eventually it will pack down to a nice walking surface. Weeds will grow through anything you put down, but that's another issue. The upside is, it won't get stuck onto everything that touches it and it stays in place. You'll be dragging a hose around to water your plants right? That's a mess with cinder.

Since this post, a few observations/suggestions:

When you order it, be sure to ask for "clean" 1 1/2 inch drain rock. This doesn't have, or at least not as much "fines" (powdery like stuff). I don't know if they actually have 2 different kinds, but at least that lets the person loading the truck to make an effort to get as much rock as they can. I think they can do things to make it more rock and less of the finer stuff.

I would ask the driver to spread it about 2 inches minimum. (They probably all can do this, I only mentioned Ross because he's done it for me twice and was very happy with his work). That's also how you order it. Tell them the measurements and how thick.

Since he couldn't get close to the house, I had him leave a couple of piles that I raked up to the garage. It was a real pain to rake. You actually have to shovel it to spread it, then rake, so be careful how big a pile you ask for!

Yes, it packs down really nice, but I have noticed in areas where you turn your vehicle it (obviously) doesn't pack down since it's always being disturbed.

After he had put it everywhere I wanted it, rather than just "using it up" by spreading it, I had him leave the extra in a pile on the side of the property. It's really nice for making walkways. Again, more effort than regular gravel, but in my opinion, way nicer in the end.

So, overall, after 4 years, still happy with my choice. It's all still there and hasn't "disappeared" as regular gravel seems to.

We followed Chasʻ good advice re Sanford and Ross and weʻve been very happy with how it has lasted.
