Have you bought any gas lately? - HiloJulie - 03-13-2026

On Friday, March 6th, 2026, I filled up the gas tank of my husbands F150 at the Kurtistown 7-11/Union 76/J. Hara. Gas was $4.899 per gallon.

Today, I filled up my car, same gas station, same gas type, even managed to get the same gas pump, and it is $5.329.

So in six days, the price is up 43 cents per gallon.

Now maybe, my information sources are insulating me from a great deal, not the least of which can explain a logical reason as to why this massive price increase just took place.

Anyone got any ideas?

I have a suggestion!
Maybe we could provide something called “incentives” to encourage people to buy EV cars?  Kinda like the “subsidies” and “tax write offs” and “Intangible Drilling Costs” that the oil companies receive?

Here in Hawaii with plentiful sunshine across much of the state, people could even charge their cars with electric from their own rooftops.

What happens in Puna, stays on Punaweb.

Amen my brother or sister.

And the price of gas went up 43 cents per gallon in the last six days right here in Puna!

Right on Moderator 2!  We are now officially deleting national politics on Punaweb, no matter how well it is weaved into Puna/Hawaii.

It's morning in Puna.

no matter how well it is weaved into Puna/Hawaii.

And yet you wove it so intricately!

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Back when we bought our 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid plug in, the government plus Ford incentives made it a no brainier decision over that of its identically equipped gasoline only counterpart.

Only downside so far:

80% of the cool navigational/entertainment control features don't work here due to lack of Hawaii satellite coverage.

Upsides:

Everything

Best upside:

At its present (and generally normal) use, I won't have to refill the gas tank for 3 to 4 months and when it needs a charge, I am on solar!

I got a friend like that, got all that kine stuff, all the bells and whistles, and still says he's spent more than 1k in the last year having his nazi mobile towed home 'cause he keeps running out of electrons and got nowhere to get more..

Methinks it's a good idea.. but so are lots of stuff that never gets off the drawing board. A good idea if you can bend your lifestyle around it. But my buddy gots clients who expect him to be someplace at some time no matter, rain or shine. And then that fancy nazi mobile (he got it cheap second hand when the iconic leader of that company X'ed himself out of vogue and the used car lots in Hilo had a glut of 'em) of his is just a big ol' paper weight. And a toxic soup of trash to boot.

I know someone else has one hybrid that's dying because the battery no more hold the charge and a replacement cost more than the car is worth.. and another who had to have repairs done on a full on EV and the dealer's shop had to ship it to the mainland 'cause they no more the tools, or mechanics trained in using them.

Yep, using an island that's the furthest from anything on Earth for that kine development of new technology is a hard sell. I sure ain't buying into it. But hey, good ol' Mr Barnum said..

I’ve had my EV for 3 or 4 years now.
I’ve never run out of charge.  If you drive to Kona there are something like 20 public charging stations.  In Hilo there’s the level 3 HECO charger across from Hilo Shopping Center.  A free charger at Target.

When I bought the car I could get 405 miles at 100%.  Now it’s 395.

He can always buy a hybrid if he finds budgeting and calculating miles and percentages isn’t possible with his unpredictable work schedule.

The same thing happened to me with my hybrid to replace a high voltage cable under a recall. Arranged the service with Orchid Isle Ford, but they had to ship it to Long Beach, CA to a Ford Dealer there and back. Took like 35 plus days.

But Orchid Isle Ford gave me a brand new Escape at the time and we put on almost 2,500 miles on the loaner all under warranty. Didn't cost us a penny.

Well, except for the extra gas we would not have had to buy if we had the hybrid car to begin with.

The notion that EVs are gonna save the day is a bit more hype than most, especially EV owners, would like to admit. Where yeah there are some savings, especially for the end user, in environmental degradation, overall they're not getting us to nirvana.
