Vandalised Jeep - Christian - 07-08-2008 So the day we arrived on the island we rode the taxi back from our Nanawale experience, through the Keeau-Pahoa road towards Hilo and I noticed a Jeep cherokee parked on the left side of the road. It seemed like the driver left it behind for some reason. Now, I noticed that car because I love Jeep cherokees, especially the 4 door sport models. So there is no way I would have not looked. Then the following day we rode past it again in a taxi. It was still there, oddly. So, the other day we finally rent a car. And we go to Ainaloa check things out. When we drive back to Hilo, we see the Jeep is still there... ...but not quite the way we remembered it. Someone had busted the entire car with a baseball bat. All windows were broken and there was a man's underwear hung on the antenna. The Jeep stayed that way for a few days. Today we drove home from the Keeau Humane Society and it was gone. I have no idea what kind of person would do that to someone else's car. Seems so gratuitous and unmotivated. That's not that ALOHA thing I heard about. RE: Vandalised Jeep - Guest - 07-08-2008 Welcome to Puna... So much to learn... so little time. Many cars get busted up all the time. Just be glad it wasn't yours.[] ------- It is the way, the way it is RE: Vandalised Jeep - Andrew - 07-08-2008 Best not to leave a car unattended on the side of the road for several days anywhere. Surprised actually it lasted that long. Try leaving a car unattended at the side of the road in say Detroit and see how long it lasts. There will be a major supply of cheap SUVs on the market soon, already starting. No many places in the country where you can park like that for days and not expect somthing bad to happen! RE: Vandalised Jeep - David M - 07-08-2008 Have to chuckle. Not just Puna. Ever see an "abandoned" vehicle on side of a NYC road? What might takes days in Puna can be accomplished in mere hours. David Ninole Resident RE: Vandalised Jeep - Hawaiibound - 07-08-2008 I saw the same Jeep... and yeah, it happens everywhere! Doesn't make it right, but it's reality. RE: Vandalised Jeep - rusty h - 07-08-2008 you can leave a car on the side of the road here in Alaska in North Pole and it safe for days.....that is untill hunting season [8D] RE: Vandalised Jeep - Hawaiibound - 07-08-2008 lol, I guess there is an exception to every rule RE: Vandalised Jeep - Christian - 07-09-2008 I wasn't speaking comparatively. It could have happened in Florida, Texas, Mexifornia, Abu Dhabi, Timbuktu. I still do not understand the mindset that would randomly vandalise and destroy other people's property. I don't think it is acceptable anywhere and I feel sad that the human race still has in itself that instinct to "destroy something beautiful". Though I'd have been a lot less emotionally involved if it hadn't been a Jeep. ;-) RE: Vandalised Jeep - missydog1 - 07-09-2008 I'm not sure I understand the mindset either, but it's here. This is common, often the car gets torched too. If I were you, I'd consider it a wake-up call in moving here that even though the island is incredibly beautiful, and the weather miraculous, and the philosophy of aloha is strong -- there are a fair number of people here who are every bit as messed up as you'd find in a real bad area on the mainland. You will be living side by side with them. Don't let it get you down, but don't pretend it ain't so and fail to take precautions, either. You already got two lessons with the rental horror and then the tweaker renters down the hall. Lesson -- chose the place you plan to settle and build carefully. Look at everything around the land, not just the land. Do your homework on the subdivision. Be aware. ETA and ... if your car breaks down, get it towed immediately. Sub lesson - be sure to have extended towing coverage on your car (I have 100 mile towing). |
