Now that was a nice long shaker!

That one would be difficult to miss. Anyone sleep through it? Reports of some damage Kona side.

RE: Did you feel that one? - randomq - 05-23-2026

Probably would have slept through it if the dogs hadn't barked! Our house is actually concreted and rebarred into the solid rock below, so even the big ones don't feel too big...

Biggest one since the 6.9 in 2018?

RE: Did you feel that one? - ironyak - 05-23-2026

That it is to the best of my recollection (and one of the other last bastions of the old web Wikipedia agrees as well ;)

ETA: Went digging, and there was actually a 6.2 in Oct 2021 down in Na'alehu, so it appears yesterday's was actually second strongest since 2018.

The Did You Feel It map from last night, and the "socials", has many reports from Oahu, Kauai, and even one from Niʻihau as well (an earthquake that goes where ever it wants, even the Forbidden Zone)

Does anyone know what "the weight of the islands on the tutonic plate" means?  I'm going to look it up  Huh

RE: Did you feel that one? - MyManao - 05-23-2026

The tectonic plate referenced is the slab of rock that makes up most of the ground the Pacific Ocean sits above. The rock, the crust of the earth. So, that crust, the Pacific Ocean Plate, is bearing a considerable amount of weight already. All that water weighs a bunch as it is.

The islands are made up of rock, which is heavier than the water. As such the weight of the islands causes the crust to deform, to bend downward into the underlying interior of the planet. Overall that weight creates a trough the islands sit in that is about 1 kilometer deeper than the general depth of the ocean’s seafloor.

Teutons-Those would be Germans.   Big Grin

I recently learned that the massive rockfall above and adjacent to the Halema'uma'u trail happened in 1983 during a magnitude 6.6 quake.

Did anyone else get an alert on their phone just before the shaking started?

RE: Did you feel that one? - kalianna - 05-24-2026

I did not, but I read that you can get that alert on an android by turning on the earthquake alert in the settings, under safety and emergency. I turned mine on for next time. Iʻm sure a simple Google search can tell you how to set it on an iPhone too. People reported getting the alert just a second or two before it hit.
