Homeless people problem - sistersue - 08-06-2026 Hi - maybe you can give advice on this problem. My daughter let her cousin pitch tents in her backyard for herself and her husband and adult son, until they could "get on their feet". My daughter owns her little house. Well it's been a whole year and now she wants them to leave. She's at the end of her rope with them knocking on her door every day wanting to mooch something. They also use her bathroom. The school "friend" is very abusive to her son and husband and throws screaming fits for hours. Our family scraped together enough money for them to buy a car and go camp somewhere else. Does anyone on this board know where they can go? Do they have any legal right to stay since they've been allowed to stay there for a year? Thank you for any ideas. This is all new to us and so stressful. RE: Homeless people problem - Durian Fiend - 08-07-2026 Can we assume she’s asked them politely to leave recently and they have resisted? IMO, your daughter made a big mistake by allowing them to stay so long before losing her patience. Where they can go next is not your family’s problem to solve. Perhaps they could be asked to come up with a date within the month when they will be leaving-in the car you’ve bought them! If they aren’t out on that day then the vigilante crew at Punaweb will show up to physically escort them away. RE: Homeless people problem - kalianna - 08-07-2026 Thatʻs a pretty glib reply to people in a serious situation. Go to the police and tell them what has happened. Because youʻve let them stay for so long you will need to begin eviction proceedings which could be lengthy. Or wait until they are gone then pack up the tents and change your locks. Good luck. . RE: Homeless people problem - sistersue - 08-07-2026 It's not a glib reply because the two men have had a whole year to find jobs and haven't even tried. The woman is mentally ill and refuses to see a doctor. Durian Fiend - I love your "vigilante" idea. I don't know if you're joking or not, but it made me feel good and safer. RE: Homeless people problem - kalianna - 08-07-2026 Not you, SS. I was talking about the Punaweb bar and grill. Which doesnʻt exist. RE: Homeless people problem - Durian Fiend - 08-07-2026 It exists if we want it to, and that approach is certainly one to consider. I am confident some of my neighbors would help me out this way in a similar situation. For Sistersue, we can't really gauge how intractable these people are with the given information. I believe that legally they would need to be given 30 days notice since they're "tenants". So, there are several ways to approach the problem, such as: Appeal to their "good" nature, strong arm them, bribe them (Hey, here's $500 to get the hell outta here!), or go down the legal road. RE: Homeless people problem - Punatang - 08-07-2026 doesnʻt exist. Non-believer. Hi Sister Sue, You say.. your daughter, and her cousin.. so I am left imagining there are elders, you're her mother.. the cousin's mother and father.. one of them.. are they siblings of your's perchance? Can the elders in this situation confer? Come to agreement.. put pressure on the young ones to recognize and protect the over all family dynamic? Impress on the one in the tent, hey it's untenable, but so, it can be equally untenable elsewhere and not challenge the relationships we have that have to endure far beyond the moment and one or another's personal challenges? That would be my first approach.. get tutu and kane to put their foot down.. stop with the pilikia already. Another would be for you, and your daughter, to do the leg work to contact the appropriate organizations and find them an alternative. Something they should do themselves. Contact social services, church groups, talk it up every which way.. find housing temporary or otherwise.. and present it as a done deal. Here's the plan.. move on. But short of that.. it's probably time to have the buddhas come in and help them on their way. When they aint there pack up their stuff and put in on the curb. But that's got to be heart wrenching. And I would hate to think you all would have to resort to such tactics. God bless. RE: Homeless people problem - Olohana 1790 - 08-07-2026 1st........... what State are you in? I couldnt tell from the generic story... is the lot 10 acres or 1/4 acre? in lower Puna. they are called WWOOFers and your daughter seems to have dropped the ball by NOT making them fakas do actual 'WORK' she could have had a shed built, the back 2 acres cleared and planted w/pakalolo, or at least fix the doughboy catchment RE: Homeless people problem - sistersue - 08-07-2026 (08-07-2026, 07:28 PM)MyManao Wrote:(08-06-2026, 10:25 PM)sistersue Wrote: Hi - maybe you can give advice on this problem. My daughter let her cousin.. It's her friend but they've always called each other "cousin". And you're right about putting our "foot down" finally. My daughter is not alone in this problem. She has two adult wonderful daughters who are around to help her as well as me. It is heart-wrenching especially since they've been so close since they were 6 years old, but have obviously gone in different life directions. Thank you everyone for your input. |
