Hawaii Socialist Democrat Movement Fails to Gain Traction. - Punatang - 08-19-2026

Thank Goodness.  Great article in the HSA.

https://www.staradvertiser.com/2026/08/16/hawaii-news/hawaii-democratic-socialist-movement-fails-to-gain-traction/

...Mizuno said local Democrats are wary of embracing extremely left socialists who want “free (school) lunch and free health care. Somebody’s got to pay for it, either through extreme taxes, government or private involvement. You’ve got to be realistic...

...Case reminded voters that the state would lose his seat on the Appropriations Committee and the seniority that would move him up in the committee if Democrats retake the House in November.
It was a message that resonated with urban Honolulu voters, many of whom are likely veterans, family of veterans or rely on military contracts, federal jobs and other federal spending, Moore said.
“The core of the (Hawaii) Democratic Party is still centrist and pragmatic,” he said. “Because Hawaii is such a Democratic state, I think that there’s often an assumption that there’s a huge well of progressive voters. And every time we see a progressive challenger, there’s an assumption that this is the time they’re going to break through.”
The progressive movement that has supported democratic socialists on the mainland are often driven by young voters. But in Hawaii, Moore explained, “younger voters don’t often turn out to vote.”
All of those factors meant that “Case performed even better than most people thought he was going to,” he said. “The core of the (Hawaii) Democratic Party is still older, centrist, organized labor voters who prefer their candidates to be older and centrist.” …

The roads are free. The fire department comes to your burning house for free.. you fall over a cliff the rescue guys come and get you.. for free.. your trash is hauled away.. your kids go to school.. you call the police.. the military protects.. for free.. or so it seems.. doesn't it?

We pay taxes, the money is redistributed to take care of our common needs. We live in a socialistic society. GET OVER IT! Free meals at school are a BLESSING! Every civilized country on Earth has universal healthcare EVERY SINGLE ONE BUT US! And to not have it is to treat our citizens like animals. Insurance companies making money on people suffering. It is sickness itself.

So take your anti-socialism crap over to F—-Book.. or some other stupid online place people bitch! It's childish crap and an affront to civilized people.. it''s stupid!

Punatang did not write that.  Mizuno did.  Nice try at misrepresentation.

It is an article in our state's leading, very liberal, newspaper.  Take it up with them and the folks they accurately quoted.  And go outside.  Fresh air is good.  Ano has a non-violent communication course you should, respectfully, maybe think about looking into.  It's Right here in Puna.  Aloha

You wrote it, you posted it, you own it. If I were you I'd delete the thing and take it to F—-book.

Punaweb, especially right now, is not the place for all of that nonsense IMHO.

I wish you agreed with yourself.

Most school complexes already have free breakfast, lunch and after-school snacks for 100% of the campuses. It is based upon the percent that are in S.N.A.P. Pahoa and Keaau are among many that have this. Last stats I saw was that nearly 90% of Pahoa students were on S.N.A.P. so it qualified all students automatically.

The article is behind a paywall.

Who were the so called Democratic Socialist -whatever that means-candidates?  I suspect they were/are weak ones, that's why they're not "gaining traction".

As for "free" services,  two thirds of health care spending in the US is already subsidized by the federal government.  The privatized component is greatly parasitic.

Durian Fiend - The article is behind a paywall.

Unfortunately, yes.  However, it also appeared in the Hawaii Herald Tribune right here on BI and it seems like there is no paywall. YMMV  https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2026/08/17/hawaii-news/hawaii-democratic-socialist-movement-fails-to-gain-traction/

Definitely no paywall on Yahoo news, where it also appeared:  https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/hawaii-democratic-socialist-movement-fails-213700044.html

Much of the article is about Ed Case winning his primary:
"U.S. Rep. Ed Case was correct when he told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser ahead of the Aug. 8 primary election that mainland political trends, namely the unexpected rise of democratic socialists knocking off more moderate members of their party, do not always translate to Hawaii.

They certainly did not in Case’s own primary race against state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, 42, a left-of-center Democrat who represents Kaneohe and parts of Kailua.

The more moderate, 73-year-old incumbent won the party’s nomination in a landslide, with 55.7% of the Democratic vote, or 63,679 votes, compared to 35.6% of the vote for Keohokalole, who drew only 40,740 votes."

Note that while Senator Keohokalole may be more progressive than Ed Case (not hard to do), he isn't a DSA member.

Another important issue to highlight:
"Former state Rep. John Mizuno, 62, failed in his Democratic Party comeback attempt to regain his former House District 29 seat to represent Kamehameha Heights-Kalihi Valley, losing to incumbent Rep. Ikaika Hussey, 48.
...
Even though Hussey is more progressive than he is, Mizuno said local Democrats are wary of embracing extremely left socialists who want “free (school) lunch and free health care... "

So Mizuno lost to a younger and more progressive candidate (Hussey has said he favors "public financing of renewable energy and agriculture" and Hawaii should "raise taxes on the ultra-rich so that we can invest more in education"), but Mizuno is consoling himself that at least he didn't lose to a DSA member? Apparently no (?) DSA members ran in Hawai'i's Democractic primaries, and hence no conventional Hawai'i Democrats lost to them? Um, ok, strange cope.

leilanidude - Most school complexes already have free breakfast, lunch and after-school snacks for 100% of the campuses. It is based upon the percent that are in S.N.A.P. Pahoa and Keaau are among many that have this.
Actually, near all public schools in Puna provide free meals regardless of income through the Community Eligibility Provision or (CEP) program. This includes Keonepoko, Pahoa El/Intermediate/High, HAAS PCS, Keaau El/Intermediate/High, Mt View El, Volcano PCS, and many other schools on island and across the state.

It looks like the socialists are already here, all around us, and they're (gasp!) making sure school kids have enough to eat, something that most local families would say is thankfully the situation.

Yes, but, the people in the red hats say...!

I think it's the hat's fault. Gotta be, right? Otherwise, our education system has completely failed us. And that can't be so, can it?
