Vog in HPP!!! - Beachboy - 09-14-2008 Yikes, I can't remember the last time I awoke with Vog all around me? I got a lot of yard work to do today too! Plus I hope my dogs deal with it okay? What are our winds today...'variables winds'? I live down on 3rd Ave. so I normally have the ocean breeze to cut down on vog. So this is totally out of the norm for my area?!?! I guess I need to step outside and check weather conditions better? ----------- have a great diet. You're allowed to eat anything you want, but you must eat it with naked fat people. ~Ed Bluestone RE: Vog in HPP!!! - macuu222 - 09-14-2008 I'm on 5th. Alittle voggy this early morning here also...but it's clearing up as I speak. Lack of wind allows the vog to just roll down the mountainside on all sides instead of the predominate westerly direction. RE: Vog in HPP!!! - Bullwinkle - 09-14-2008 pretty nasty up here in the acres also... what is really scary is the lack of real time information... the county site has not been updated since aug 26th or so The feds were pretty critical of the county vog response and reporting, I see why this morning anyone find any real time information I may have missed? RE: Vog in HPP!!! - Chuysmom - 09-14-2008 the news said there would be south westerly winds for the big island...i'm thinkin' that's what's going on. It's blowin' in the wind...[xx(] Carrie Rojo "The sun and moon collide. Isn't gravity a funny thing? The universe explodes apart. All the children sing..." Todd Rundgren RE: Vog in HPP!!! - Kelena - 09-14-2008 If you go to the Halema'uma'u webcam, you can get a very accurate idea of the Vog forecast. You want the plume to be slightly bent over and facing away from the camera, not going straight up as it is at the moment, or --God Forbid-- a big, unformed mess going all over the place as it was last evening (when this happens, you can no longer see the caldera very well because it is just filled with smoke, or whatever that stuff is). The answer my friend, is blowing in the tradewinds. Without them, you will know you are living on the slopes of the world's most active volcano. http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/cam3/ RE: Vog in HPP!!! - DanielP - 09-14-2008 A deep low pressure trough from the northwest is counteracting the trades. Vog in Puna is Pele telling us when to go enjoy Kona side. RE: Vog in HPP!!! - macuu222 - 09-14-2008 At least we only have vog a couple times a year. I'm sure thankful I don't live on the leeward side where the reverse is true. RE: Vog in HPP!!! - Liz - 09-14-2008 Try this site for up-to-date vog info: http://www.nature.nps.gov/air/webcams/parks/havoso2alert/havoalert.cfm It doesn't show the whole island but you can see which way the plume is blowing. And it'll update itself every few minutes. aloha, Liz "The best things in life aren't things." RE: Vog in HPP!!! - Bullwinkle - 09-14-2008 Thanks for the links .... and sharing a bit of a before coffee rant this Sunday morning. Agreed... that one can get a seat of the pants feeling for what kind of day its going to be by watching the plume ... or looking out the window, taking a deep breath .... What I was looking for was a ppm readout and still can not find one .... Isn't that what the state and federal funding (and study recommendations) was / were all about? (imho)It has been demonstrated that there is a potential for a problem if there were a massive release of gas from the vents. In this day and age it is borderline criminal activity, certainly negligent not to have real time numbers posted on a real time website updated when ever vog is present. and speaking of answers "blowing in the wind", "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem" has always been my edict. In that spirit: Some of us punaweb members could start our own little network, since the county seems to be asleep at the wheel. I remember reading that the schools had hand held ppm read out units that they purchased for 400$. My gut reaction is that means a real price of about $200 on ebay - grin Id be game, 4 or 5 more members reporting from the popular subdivisions to a topic here - could even involve the associations - thinking out loud.... and Bobs' your uncle Regards and Aloha this voggy morning RE: Vog in HPP!!! - missydog1 - 09-14-2008 Welcome to Hawai'i, where Civil Defense is vigilant ... unless it's SUNDAY, then fuggedaboudit until tomorrow. They didn't update the shark related beach closures on the weekend either, even though there might be one or two people heading for the beach ... the County is pauhana. |
