CALL: 961 - 8211 -- Aloha, Kathleen RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - Guest - 09-17-2008 This is one I wish they would have put before the voters.[V] ------- Glob RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - Bob Orts - 09-17-2008 They didn't, but the people can under Article XI of the Hawaii County Charter. [ ![]() RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - Guest - 09-19-2008 Dixie vetoed the law today. ..."said the Hawai'i County Council did not provide enough opportunity for nonprofit organizations to comment on the bill"... ------- Just a piece of my thinking RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - John S. Rabi - 09-19-2008 I am glad she did. Don't we have more important issues for the Council to vote on?! It's not just supermarket bags, it's a wider issue. Aloha, John S. RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - dakine - 09-19-2008 quote: I think that is complete BS John! It is what the Council spent their time on, and it is a step, small maybe, and to some unimportant, but still one that some people find worthy, if only as a token step towards acknowledging the bigger evil that plastic is in our lives. RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - Mitzi M - 09-19-2008 Yeah, think about it... We would be asking people to change one habit - kind of a small thing - to avoid a load of pollution to our environment. We'd be saying Hawai'i is special and we give a rip about it. Heck - so is the rest of the planet. Would we save the world if the stores on this island stopped using plastic bags? Well...that's a tall one, but it does send a message. I'm just sorry that Dixie didn't get that message. RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - John S. Rabi - 09-19-2008 dakine, BS or not, look at it this way. I buy groceries and get a plastic bag. I reuse the plastic bags to put them in my garbage can, so I don't buy garbage bags. I reuse them to to carry my lunch to the office; I reuse them to put my wet swimming suits in; I reuse them to dispose cat litter; I reuse them to put my shoes in when I travel; and I could go on. I truly believe this bill is not a good bill. Aloha, John S. Rabi, GM,ARB,BFT,CM,CBR,FHS,PB,RB 808.989.1314 http://www.JohnRabi.com Typically Tropical Properties "The Next Level of Service!" RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - DickWilson - 09-19-2008 John; We reuse those bags in the same manner, but eventually they end up in the trash where they do not decompose. We use mesh bags now and get paper for lunches, etc. Plastic just does not go away and any step to remove it from landfills is IMHO a good thing, would be nice if people gave them up willing, but taint gonna happen. Called Acting Mayor, see how much good it did, but tried. dick wilson RE: Bill 326: a ban on plastic bags - Acting Mayor - hikatz - 09-20-2008 This is an issue that should be decided by the voters not the county! Like John we reuse the plastic bags exactly the same way, plus use the bags to recycle newspapers, catalogs, carry books, garage sales, the list goes on. You cannot do this with paper bags ect. especially in this climate! When the bag is empty I automatically tie the bag in a knot, which I wish more people did, no risk of blowing away. Supermarket bags do break down, have left books to long, you go to pick up the bag, it crumbles into little pieces not fun cleaning up. Check the bottom of the bags from the markets they are marked HDPE #2[ ![]() |
