Missing people! - lavalinda - 09-20-2008

What's with all the missing people. Seems like their are several missing people in Puna...mostly women and recent. One lady visiting the area staying in HPP has vanished reported missing Sept 1. It is barely touched on by the news.
Being female and new to the area should I be worried?

While it always pays to be aware of one's surroundings and to take some basic steps for personal security, I don't think there is any reason to be fearful or paranoid. Puna seems to attract a lot of people who like to live below the radar or on the fringe. Dropping out of sight for a while is routine for some of these folks, male and female. Add the mentally ill and drug culture people and you get a lot of "dropouts" who drop out of sight for a while, but are mostly OK. Of course there have been some spectacular disappearances that did involve harm or worse, but there is usually a personal, and not random, element to these tragedies. Overall, I would worry less here than the great majority of places on the mainland.

Cheers,
Jerry

Interesting that you should post this, lavalinda, as I just stumbled on the Patricia Kenny story last night, and I googled around, and all the papers reported it in brief, extremely brief, like it's barely a story.

Any time a woman goes missing, and her car is found somewhere, that is pretty alarming. And when there's no husband or angry ex in the picture, as seems here, that sounds like something in the community that we should feel concerned about!

Who else is missing?

Ed to respond to Jerry -- she was staying in HPP and her rental car was found about four days after she was last seen, on Shell Road in Nanawale.

Thanks Kathy for the reply! I was just going to email jerry with the News article. I'm from the same area of WA has this Lady and I also googled the story. Hardly any coverage about this lady I guess it is not important enough!

RE: Missing people! - JerryCarr - 09-20-2008

In my first post, I was speaking about the general history of such incidents. The specifics of this case would indicate the need for a vigorous police response, regardless of the amount of publicity generated. The local media, the main newspaper in particular, are not known for being thorough or following up on their initial reporting. It would be interesting to know if a thorough forensics examination of the car and surrounding area was done.

I still stand by my view that Puna is a safe place overall in this regard. I am more than willing, however, to acknowledge that the sorts of factors I mentioned in the first post can lead to complacency on the part of the police and the public.

Cheers,
Jerry

Many missing kids - runaways too.

I think Punaweb needs to work on solving what appears to be a crime. Let's get to work. Okay, we don't know much. Where was she staying HPP? Do we know that? Have they subjected the car to a forensic examination?

First question: Do we think she was in her rental car when it left HPP?

Let's not forget about this missing man that vanished Friday in Mountain View.

It doesn't make as much news when it's a guy missing.

Picture Here

Can't forget about these three that each have a different reason why they are "missing"

It's an epidemic here in Hawaii and the amount that are missing is staggering and people don't often believe them until I direct them to this page and tell them to click on (Search Missing Children... then Pictures no pictures).

I count over 100 between the two Pictures and No Pictures!

RE: Missing people! - missydog1 - 09-21-2008

I am very interested in what happened, but the useful info seems to be nil. Nothing on what she was doing, whether anyone knows why she left HPP that day, whether she was alone, whether she knew anyone in Nanawale, where exactly on Shell Road, there isn't much to go on ... one can only spec.

The last really bad thing I know of to hit the bigtime news that related to Nanawale was this:

As JennyCarr said, this was one of those crimes of personal motivation, not random.
However, if you read the comments on the Tribune Herald story, which are more enlightening about Puna state of mind than the news story, people who knew him said he had gone after strangers at random before. And there are others like him, angry individuals.

I hope Patricia didn't meet up with any such bad luck.
By reminding people that bad things can happen here, I don't mean to start the "and this is why I want to carry a gun" folks going off.

More that for women who come here who are a bit starry-eyed, it's good to be aware there are some deeply messed up psyches coming out of Puna homes, for whatever reason. You should pay attention when you go places by yourself, and not put yourself in a position where you could be overpowered, and be wary of invitations. Good advice for women alone anywhere.

Damon, what do you think of the guy who runs Hawaaian-TV.com? He has extreme conspiracy theories, especially about missing children, but what do you think, are there kernels of truth in any of them?
