Voter Turnout lowest since statehood - macuu222 - 09-21-2008

Guess the majority of Hawaiians Hawaii Residents don't really care about local politics. Probably not a good idea having the county fair the same day as the election.

I hope your referring to Local people and not necessarily "Hawaiians"

On the Big Island, the Candidates of Hawaiian Ancestry did relatively well in the primaries:

Pilago, Hanohano, Naeole, Enriques all faired well in there races.

I would say the "HAWAIIAN" Vote definitely played a "race" card in these district races.

I think the precinct break down is very interesting too.

Click here for the 2004 precinct figures and here for 2006, but it would be interesting to see if more or less from certain districts are voting now.

Just a piece of my thinking

Maybe it just meant people who live in Hawai'i? When I lived in Nevada, I was a Nevadan, in California, a Californian, but since coming to Hawai'i, I'm nothing, not a Hawaiian, not a local -- other than (expletive deleted) haole, what do I call me?

I'll make it clearer....Residents of Hawaii.

Something to learn ... analogies to other states that did not get their names from indigenous sovereign peoples do not apply.

No one here is a Hawaiian because of residency. Hawaiian properly means one thing in Hawai'i, and that is Native Hawaiian or part blood thereof.

In general, if you are Caucasian you are not "local" even if you were born and raised, although if you have 100% local accent and speak primarily pidgin you're in a gray area and might be a local.

If you are a haole, you are a resident -- a malihini or a kama'aina (if you assimilate well).

I would never refer to myself as a Hawaiian. I'm a Hawai'i voter.

If you disagree, imagine being here for the next census. I guarantee if you are not of Native Hawaiian ancestry you are not checking the Hawaiian box on the census.

The elections are one area I haven't assimilated to Hawai'i. Holding major elections on Saturday is still foreign to me. I can see how this might have started, say in the plantation days there was no way the plantations would stop work on Tuesday so people could vote. (I am making this up, I don't know why elections are on Saturday.)

Anyhow, I have missed every Saturday election because I'm still programmed to think of Tuesdays as election days. My bad.

I do have a complaint about the approach to voter registration here, only to make it I have to pull out the dreaded "in California they do it this way" phrase. Sorry, I try not to do that. But in California I could not go grocery shopping in an election year without seeing someone outside with a registration table. Here, I have not seen one. I was looking because I moved and need to change my address.

I think there should be more energy put into registration stations, and less into standing by the road holding up signs. I am not going to vote for someone because of sign waving, just not going to do it. Instead, have someone man a table and give out information.

And hold elections on Tuesday with people guaranteed time off to go vote, not on Saturday when people are having BBQ's, beach, golf, mowing the lawn and doing chores, and let's not forget the County Fair.

*off soapbox*

There are voter registration tables at many events. Also before elections you do the "drive through" registration at Bayfront. OR simply fill out the voter registration form in the front of the phone book and mail in.

I've been thinking about this since I posted and I've decided to call myself a HIres (pronounced high-rez), short for Hawai'i resident. Then Nevadan can become NEVres, Californian CALres, Texan TEXres, etc. Although, since there are Americans and Native Americans, I don't see why there couldn't be Hawaiians and Native Hawaiians, without offending any delicate sensibilities.
