Flat Screens only - Box TV's are obsolete? - YurtGirl - 09-23-2008

We went to Sears to find a small TV for our house the other day. Just a small one that would work with rabbit ears to catch the local channels... We searched all over, but the only thing we could find were flat screens, $250 and up. Wal-mart? Same thing. One of the sales reps said they've made the box kind obsolete. That's all good and well, I'm thinking, but I'll be dinged if I'm paying $250 for a small TV! What are they thinking?! I've lived more without one than with one anyway, but just the thought of that... Geez, you could get a decent running vehicle for as much as a standard sized TV!

We bought a flat screen to work with the computer. Our computer now does EVERYTHING for use. You can download everything these days and most TV stations offer their shows on their websites. It cost us more to get a flat screen however we never rent movies or pay for cable TV anymore. If the above doesnt make it good enough to spend the 250 check craigs list, I have actually seen the box TVs on the free page there.

Tube TV's are bad... they should be banned...

And the analog tuners will be obsolete in February. After that, you need a box to make it work for the digital broadcasts.

Hey Yurt girl. Go to a computer store and get a tv tuner card for your computer.
69.00 bux or so .
Just put that in your pc and add rabbit ears. you can also hook it it sat or cable.
What is cool, is you can watch tv in a small screen while you are on your computer or you can make it full screen.

You might find a very cheap box TV at a garage sale! I see them there all the time.

Thanks for the tips all! esnap, do you need to have highspeed internet for that card? Any other system requirements? I'm on a wireless pc card for internet, not terrible on speed, but it doesn't do video or live streaming very well at all.

YurtGirl.
No internet connection needed at all.
Here is a link for a 60.00 dollar one

I put one in my daughters PC and it even has a remote.
they also let you tivo stuff.

works with rabbit ears or cable or sat.

I went to a few places and looked for the card. They said it, too, is considered obsolete now and they quit selling them because once the whole shebang goes digital it wouldn't work. Arg. Well, who needs it anyway? Someone must think we all do since they're trying (Succeeding!) to charge the kinds of prices they are these days for TV's and now even the TV signal. NPR and the sounds of nature are best, glad they made it more difficult than I care to deal with. Thanks for trying to help though!
