Sustainability and self sufficiency have meaning - Rob Tucker - 09-29-2008

Sustainability and self sufficiency takes on new meaning in the face of economic upheaval.

The argument of who is to blame are of minor interest in the face of extreme economic distress.

Our ability to actually ride out an economic storm in Hawaii will be tougher in some ways and easier in others than mainland locations. I see the biggest single factor being how will we as a people react?

Will we(or you) be proactive or reactive?

Will we (or you) panic or work together cooperatively?

Name three things you or we can do, actually do, to improve our or your chances of riding out the storm?

Will we be proactive or reactive? (Both)

Will we panic or work together cooperatively? (both)

3 things...
Work...
pay my bills...
enjoy life...

might want to change the questions to

Will you be proactive or reactive?

Will you panic or work with others cooperatively?

[thanks, did that - rob]

Ride share.
Garden, and swap veggies.
Vote out the Cartel.

Grow our own food.
Work for political change on a personal, one to one basis.
Exchange knowledge and expertise to accomplish the two goals above.

Cheers,
Jerry

We've been working on preparing for this for awhile.

Chickens! They give you eggs and fertilizer for the garden as well as roosters taste just like chicken. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hawaiichickens/

Gardens and hydroponic vegetables. We've been working on getting vegetables to grow with static hydroponics like Pam has also been demonstrating to people.

Our economy will be seeing hyper-inflation this upcoming year so if there is something you NEED (not want) then you may try to get it soon before it becomes too expensive to buy.

The DOW went down by over 700 points today, I don't know if there is anything the politicians can do to fix it since the rest of the global markets have also been tanking.

Ask the kapuna what they did during the last Great Depression and revise it so it works in today's scenario. When my dad came to visit this spring, he said our great uncle took the family money out of the banks (it took several years for all the banks to fail in the Great Depression, it didn't happen overnight and the banks are failing now) and bought a small grocery store. That store fed the extended family as well as most of the small town it was in since they gave folks food on credit.

Do what you can to get your neighbors prepared for dire economic straits. A strong community will be necessary to survive.

Hmmm.
Me?

I pledge to Buy/spend responsibly.

After having made sure I've paid my Bills, of course.

Which I'll do immediately after I do what I feel is by far the MOST important: sending another smallish donation to a certain Hawai'i-Born senator's campaign for Change.

I will NOT be returning to Thailand this next year.
I will NOT be replacing any vehicles.
I will be growing as much food as possible, and practicing some preserving and storing.
I will reduce my expenditures that are for convenience or entertainment (driving, eating out, gourmet foods).
I will trade and barter where I can.

I believe we have already made the big financial decisions to prepare for what we have seen coming for a while. Our only debt is our home. We have enjoyed Costco and Safeway, but we produce our own chickens, eggs, sheep (for meat), lettuce, veggies, fruits.

I will remind everyone to be careful of the tendency to save pennies and waste dollars. Turn that around and make it all make sense. We can work together as a community and survive if we are realistic no mater how bad it gets.

Credit purchasing may need to become a thing of the past....

>> learn how to live more sustainable lives and teach your neighbors.
>> choose better leaders / vote - act within your local government to create positive change
>> learn how to generate your own power, provide healthcare and feed yourself
