Best bank in Hawaii - lostboystoy - 10-06-2008

I currently bank with wells fargo, bank of america and a local credit union.
Am wondering which banks are better on the island, and which have convenient locations.
As we are only weeks away from coming over to secure housing. I would like to try to get as much set up at that time, before we come back pick up our belongings and start out on our new journey.

I stuck with Wells Fargo and have been happy with an off island bank.

CU HAWAII FOR ME... I had Bank of Hawaii but they "lost" a $20,000 deposit, then bounced checks I wrote against it.. and while I was having the bank manager straighten it out, some smart-a$$ teller had the guts to take ask for my atm card for a moment and CUT IT UP in front of me for being irresponsible....

Switched to CU Hawaii and have been thrilled with their service ever since.

Bank of Hawaii has worked for us. More ATM's than any other on the island. Friendly service.

This is good information. We have Chase Bank in Chicago and even after we moved to CA we kept it. Most deposits can be done with direct deposits. However, there is always a charge for ATM withdrawls, so I usually just get cash back when making a purchase (no charges for that). We had to have a WA Mu account because they handled our mortgage. We were naturally thrilled when Chase bought WA Mu, but it is a moot point really becasue our house is for sale and we are moving in January anyway.

Our Financial manager said to join a Credit Union in Hawaii, so that is what we will do, keeping most of our accounts in Chase for the time being. He said we will get more personal attention and respect in a credit union and if we ever need a mortgage or car loan they have the best rates.

Has anyone had a difficult time using a check in Hawaii from a non-Hawaiian bank even with a Hawaiian Driver's License and the check having a local address on it? Safeway stores in the SF area are now not allowing out of town bank checks for more than $125. I think that is absurd! And it is a good reason to shop at Whole Foods instead.

We continue to use our mainland bank. If we ever need to deposit or withdrawl cash...we just use what they call "shared banking" with a member bank here which deposits or withdrawls money from our mainland account.

We transferred to First Hawaiian Bank. Never had a problem with them.

I asked my mainland CU and they suggested the same.
