Commercial dog food- a question for dog lovers - StillHope - 10-11-2008
I've been using allegedly good dog food-Holistic Natural by Bench and Field.It has a lot of good stuff,even blueberries.
But after reading Andrew Lewis's info on line,I am not sure anymore.
Anyone researched the allegations?

Here's what I'm sure of Hope. The links you provided aren't informational as much as "infomercial". Andrew Lewis is preying on naive animal lovers to buy his $50 dog cookbook.
I've had to make my own dog food in the past and never felt the need to include such delicacies as:
"Pug potato & Collie cabbage stew"
"jack Russell terrier turkey omelet"
"Beagle bannana biscotti"
or as a party treat:
"dalmation doggy dip".
If you're worried about the contents of your commercial food, I think you can find alternatives and recipes for a lot less than $47.
The food I made (because I was too broke at the time to buy commercial) was essentially:
Cooked beans(mashed up)
cooked whole grains
A little fresh bacon grease, broth or vegetable oil
pinch of salt
It wasn't "Biscotti", but my dogs loved it and it contained no preservatives or unnatural ingredients.

Greg,I had my misgivings about the author an his a little bit too aggressive promotion of his book.
But there are some facts difficult to ignore.
I was always for the real food for dogs,but I got mine adopted with his "kibble preferences".
The other thing about home made food - how to make it nutritious enough and keep the weight in check.

I've had dogs all my life, most of whom died peacefully of old, all of whom were fed commercial dog food, with a few table scraps. IMHO this guy is a moron feeding on scaring pet owners. There are numerous recipes for home made dog food available on the net, without lining this jerks pockets, if you really feel the need to feed home made food.

It's dehydrated people grade stuff, that you add hot water too. They sell it at "Paws" in Kona, I think she has a lady selling it over here in Hilo now out of her house. I then switched to "Wysong" they sell it at Island Naturals. It's a kibble, but our vet in Kapaau, she's a holistic vet, says it's the best "kibble" type food there is. It's a little pricey, but I special order it by the case from Island Naturals so with the discount it breaks down to about 1.60 a pound. Even cheaper than Iams. Plus they make it with all human grade stuff, a plus when you have little ones that get into the dog food bowl.

Look at the labels carefully .... "partially digested digest" , yup we know what that is, poultry "by products" and worst of all all the chemicals found in "downed " cattle, phenobarbital etc. is very common - and you wont see that on the label
we feed "canadae" about a dollar a pound ... it is "human food grade" kibble. Woof eats less of it because of its nutritional value, we get about 6 weeks out of 30 lb bag
The pet store in kona over by the costco carries it

Went to a garage sale today where the guy had shot a turkey and tossed it into the dog pen for the dog to eat. So far the dog hadn't pulled any feathers off of it, so I guess he wasn't that hungry.
Our dogs always have kibble to eat of which the main ingredient is rice. They munch on that when they are hungry but they prefer table scraps. They also get avocado and coconut, they like those, too. And dry cat food when they can get it although Jack the Pirate Cat takes exception to their eating his food. They occasionally get rice made with meat broth with chunks of meat thrown in. They also get a lot of bones and broth and kidneys and things like that to eat. And fish, one of our dogs will steal fish if he can. The other one steals bait so it is dangerous to take them on fishing trips.

StillHope, The Biggest thing you have to look at is the ingredients,
absolutely NO CORN! dogs just like humans cannot digest corn, and in fact most dogs are allergic to corn. causes yeast infections and itchy skin. they use the corn as a cheap filler. When you buy high quality dog food you only have to feed a quarter the amount of food, and you only have a small amount of waste, when they are on corn based dog foods they just waste it and you have giant turds. Corn is cheap, for them to use as a filler.
