Galvanized pipe power poles - Royall - 12-21-2005

Yesterday (12/20) I went to Helco and got information to install a 4” or 6” galvanized power pole. The house is close enough to run directly if we go with a 100 amp service, but will be building a woodworking shop in the future and will need a 200 amp service. I was also planning to put the power underground from that pole to the house. How deep will it have to be? I forgot to ask yesterday.

Thanks,

Royall

Hey Royal Welcome to the forum, can't help you with your question but I'm pretty sure your trip to Helco would very interesting stuff for those of us still in the planning stages. I for one would like to know more about the requirements of the Galv pole and will they connect from the street straight to the home if the distance is within limits. Do they sell you the pole or do you buy it elsewhere and is 4" or 6" a requirement based on a height thing or distance.

Aloha Dave

Hi Dave, what they show on the diagrams is a 20' pole. It is set in a hole that is 4' deep, 24" minimum diameter with a foot of fine gravel around the base of the pole in the bottom. It is filled with 2500 psi concrete. I don't understand why they give a choice of 4" or 6", unless it is base on 100-amp or 200-amp service. I believe in over building when in doubt. If you want I'll try to scan the sheet Helco gave me and send it out to anyone that wants it. It will take a bit.

the reason they say 4 or 6 inch is because a year ago they came up with "new" rules only allowing 6". there was a huge outcry from the suppliers to the builders because they didn't notify anyone about the changes and the suppliers had lots of $' on order and also because ofthe additional cost. so, they backed off and we're stll allowed to use 4". doesn't have anything to do with the 100 amp vs 200 amp service. if you are within the accepted distance from their lines they will install directly on your house, other wise if you are further back from the road you can go 100' to the first pole, which is where they'll place the meter, then it's up to you to pull the wire to the next pole or your house. not that hard, i did it with the help of one friend. no they don't supply the poles(galvanized)you buy them and they are a couple of drilling companies that will drill the hole and set it up and concrete it in for you takes about an hour for two poles(you also need two ground rod holes dug by the first pole). or you can have helco put in regular telephone poles at about double the cost.

Could you recoment or post the names of the drilling companies? I contacted HPM, Trojan, and Home Depot to purchase the pole but they didn't sell them. Do you know who does?

Thanks for this reply and the on about roofing!
