if public schools isn't your "cup of tea", you still might wanna consider 'Charter schools'. They are public schools, yet operate on a smaller level like a private schools. The major difference between Malamalama Waldorf school and any of the Charter schools that are on the eastside. All Charters are free! Pahaoa has a charter school too if I remember correctly.

An Awesome school! My daugher attended their Kinderhale this last year! It was a wonderfull experiance for her. She will be attending first grade next year as well.
At first it was little tough for me to swallow the $400+ a month cost but now I can say it was worth every penny!

Try and attend one of the schools open houses that they host every few months. Or maybe enroll in their summer program to get a feel for the school.

Good Luck,
Beau S.

Thank you for suggestion..didn't think of that option...

The public schools in Hawaii will never improve if parents that care choose private schools. Public schools need more involved parents. Wouldn't it be nice to save that tuition money for a good college?

Each of us can help out the schools, not just parents. The schools here have so many needs that anything you can do for them is an improvement. There are tons of volunteer oppurtunities at the schools. That is one of the reasons charters may be better, the community has gotten involved in their creation. Even if you are not able to get into the schools, there are a lot of oppurtunities. I have said this about most of the things that people have said are lacking, volunteer to make them better. You do not even have to live here to help!

""public schools in Hawaii will never improve if parents that care choose private schools""

Hi Puna Girl,

You're so right in that statement, and I hear the same thing hear in our area. My son has been in Montessori school for the last two years and will be starting elementry school (Montessori)this coming fall.

Here's the deal, I only have one son, one shot.. I can't risk it, understand I totally agree with you but I can't gamble that one shot.

I really wish $$ it wasn't that way but there it is. In most cases it's not the kids, it's the parents. I'm very active in my community, in doing so I know most of the people, and their "lifestyles" for lack of a better word and I don't think I can change them.

It might be different there but nothing I've seen are read would lead me to believe so.

Johnnycake,

Did your son go to the Montessori school in Pahoa?

Take care,
dave

P.S. We will paying $700 a month here, so 400 don't look to bad!

Take care,
dave

Just a little venting - not aimed at anyone

So we all want to move here, talk about ALOHA, the friendly people, etc, etc, etc. That is until the subject of schools - then it's practically all negative. Ever wonder how local people feel if they knew your true thoughts on how they got to be them? After all, aren't the vast majority of them products of the very school system you all seem to abhor? So, it was OK for them, but not you little preciouses? Could make one think they aren't quite as good. Kinda makes my skin crawl when I read (usually on another forum), " I couldn't possibly move to Hawaii until after my kids finish school." Makes me want to respond - Don't bother, we don't need your superior attitude, not now, not after your kid graduates.

A good education involves much more than getting into some college. Chances of your son/daughter becoming the world's next great whatever are pretty slim, so why not help them just become a good person, friend, neighbor.

End of rant

David
