Mid-Century Modern - waynesb - 09-14-2006 I wanted to keep going from the Go airline thread, but it didn't quite seem appropriate there, so here's a new one! I saw that Breeze House, and thought "I toured that house", but then saw that it was not. The one I saw was the Sunset Celebration House. I toured THAT one when they built it at their headquarters in Menlo Park a few months ago. My partner just loved it, but it wasn't terribly practical for wet, buggy Puna. An open-to-the-sky deck between the kitchen/great room and the bedroooms!?? Come on!!!! It's the only SIP construction I've ever seen in person, and the first not on "This Old House". Of course, that's not exactly mid-century, but... Edited by - waynesb on 09/14/2006 20:15:24 RE: Mid-Century Modern - Kelena - 09-15-2006 What is SIP construction? Am I hearing you say that it is really best not to have a home that is open to the air? Please scare me now before I spend money. RE: Mid-Century Modern - waynesb - 09-15-2006 Oh, Glen! You're such a fradie-cat! I was just saying I didn't like the idea of having to go outside to move from the bedroom to the kitchen. If there were a roof, I wouldn't object nearly so much, but there are really lots of annoying flying and crawling things in Puna. The most outside I want to get before getting dressed and slathered in DEET would be a screened, covered porch. SIP = Structural Insulated Panels. The ones I saw on TV and at Sunset were styrofoam sandwiched between plywood. Castleblock's product uses concrete instead of wood. RE: Mid-Century Modern - Carey - 09-15-2006 There are some 1970's SIP homes in the area, we are renovating one in Keaau (our neighborhood has a few of them in & amongst the homes). You do want open air flow, just not OPEN to everything, esp. the night rain (getting up in your jammies to go outside to another section of your house could soak the jammies!) Plus the bugs & night critters (visions of feral cat/rat sneaking in a door!) Aloha, Carey RE: Mid-Century Modern - Kelena - 09-15-2006 It's true. The list of things about Puna that scare me is longer than a centipede. But that whole jungley, adventureland thing is also very attractive. Be there pretty soon! RE: Mid-Century Modern - tada - 09-15-2006 I thought 2 things looking at the butterfly house. 1st looks great for water catching- if you had that roof you'd have more water than you can shake a stick at. Though if there was a hurricane wouldn't it tend to fly away or am I just paranoido? Others want to make friends- I just want to make money. James Cramer RE: Mid-Century Modern - Kapohocat - 09-15-2006 Just curious - what happens when the roof at the valley starts to leak??? Those houses in Cali are fine where the avg rainfall is mostly way under 20" a year. What about when our monthly rainfall is more than that? Just curious.... -Cat RE: Mid-Century Modern - G. Leis - 09-16-2006 You're right about that valley, Cat . . . although it would leak in Calif. also - just not so quickly ![]() It's always apperaed odd to me that some of the most architecturally interesting buildings, be they residences or not always seem to have roof leakage problems. Virtually all of Frank Lloyd Wright's work fits this pattern including Fallingwater, perhaps the most beautiful house ever built in America; and its commercial equivalent the Johnson Wax Building aloha, Gene _______________________ When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: "Whose?" RE: Mid-Century Modern - Carolann R - 09-16-2006 It probably has no place here, but got me thinkin' Gene. I love this place and Gaudi's works. http://www.e-architect.co.uk/barcelona/jpgs/sagrada_familia_2.jpg Carrie "To be one, to be united is a great thing. Leis --- (tongue slightly in cheek)... FL Wright is a hack... what about Meis Van Der Rohe! What awesome work! (Just kidding on the FLW - he did some pretty interesting things!)
