Contractors? - DanW - 09-15-2006

I need a reliable, licensed GC to help me finish out my house in Mountain View. This is my first project in Hawaii and my patience and bank account are wearing thin. I can be reached at 640-1766.

Dan - I think if anyone here knows the good - the bad - the ugly of contractors and building here, Cat does. You ought to be able to 'cut to the chase' and find out what your options are.

Email me Dan, the GC we are using is fabulous.

Aloha

Having built several homes in Puna I can tell you who to stay away from. I had very bad experience with Vicar Building Investments and CenterLine Construction. Sky Builders did a very good job for me but it was a major headache to deal with his office. I have a builder who is building seven homes in Royal Hawaiian Estates for us now and I can highly recommend him. (Several of my clients used him before, he did not build for me previously because he only builds from Mt. View to Volcano.) If you want his number e-mail me privately.

Good to know! I have always heard good reports about Tony Vicar. Could you explain a little more about what went wrong (in an email if you dont feel comfortable here)...?

I would rather not say much Cat since the case still might go into litigation, but you might want to check the records at DCCA in regards to his licensing status.
Edit: 9/26/2006
Apparently, he is in good standings now. I should have checked prior to my posting. However, it does not change the fact that he was not and that's one of our exhibits in the case against him.

Thanks John! I will make a note to that effect. I suggest people check licenses if hiring a GC....(isnt that part of the reason people hire them?)

RE: Contractors? - kaptkimo - 09-28-2006

I have a "plumber problem" question. May I, as an owner/builder, LEGALLY do my own plumbing and get a licensed plumber to sign off on it? I have been told by local plumbers that the licensed plumber or his crew MUST do the actual work - that it was a county requirement. Is this true? Most of my quotes have run $900+ per fixture if a plumber does it.

Building owner-built home in Nanawale. Wife will join me when we get it to the "dry" stage.
