The Labor has begun on my House - Chili - 10-27-2006
Hi everyone,
It looks like I'm going to post my homes progress. I hope you will put up with my enthusiasum. Got a call Monday of this week from my contractor saying the lot would be cleared that day (trees needed to come down). Tuesday he said the trees would be hauled away. And they were. Thursday morning he called and said he was going to shoot the corners for the driveway and such.
I couldn't be there because my better half had the car that day. So I told him to use his own judgement and place them at his discretion (I trust his judgement). I heard nothing else from him meanwhile , but decided to take Lani (my companion thru life) up to the site this morning. What a wonderful surprise awaited us. There, in the field was a tractor with a jack hammer attached, having already dug out the hole for the septic, and now working steadily on the leach field drainage hole. Next to the holes were a very large mound of red cinders to rest the septic tank on and the cover all neccessary leach lines and such. I was told it would be in the groud by 10:30 am this morning, and get inspected by tomorrow. If everything can only go as smoothly and efficently as this throughout the entire ( I wish) project. Well, that's all for now. I hope everone else, weather building your own, or having a contractor doing it, is on schedule and with a minimum of set backs. God I love Puna. My heart is glad this is where I call home.

Hi Chili,
You have always been a positive force for the forum here, no doubt about that.
I would think everyone here would love to hear more of your enthuasium! It usually happens that the more enthuastic and positive that people are that more of it follows, ever where! Certainly that is how it should be!
Even if it does not always seem that way, I for one say, keep it up!
Beside I think everyone on the island loves a good talk story, that is what life and adventure are made of, huh.
Just keep thinking those positive thoughts going and until the end your blessing for your home will come true, it will have all gone together very smoothly. Or you can always take up burying St. Joseph in your yard. As I remember he is the patron Saint who hears those prayers for your home.
What about a prayer blessing now before the hard stuff begins?

enthusiasum! That is what we all live on here! All you need to do now is to get your camera clicking away and start posting them on the Punaweb! If it wasn't for the "building in Puna" part of this forum it would a little bit boring on this site sometimes

Sorry if you have stated this in earlier threads. Who is the contractor?
We hope to start building (HPP) in late summer 2007. We are thinking OB but want to consider a general contractor.

Wow! All the way from the Great State of Texas. The power of the internet.....Unbelieveable. Thanks for your kind words and thoughts Lucy. Even when (and I know it will) something gets a monkey wrench thrown into it, I'm going to step back, look at the Big Picture, and tell myself...."Patience, have patience. It will all come together in due time". Now I'm not much of a picture taker but I'm going to click them off the disposible camera as fast as I can and get some posted so I can share my delight with the world. I'll try to be non-repetitive on them. My contractor is TNS Construction. A relatively young fella' who branched out on his own after being in the trade for years under another independant contractor. He acquired his General Contractor's License and started up his own company. He came highly praised by the folks at Honsador Lumber. I asked for, and got some job references from him to check his work, and feel lucky to have gotten him to do the job for me. If,..... the biggest little word in the dictionary, I were younger and in better physical condition, I would have opted for doing quite alot of the work myself. I definitely envy those who are capable of and choose to pursue that route. It must be a great sence of pride that a home builder feels knowing that they have accomplished that task. But just to be on the "safe" side, I think I'll go purchase a St. Joseph medallion. It couldn't hurt. Until next time, Aloha and Mahalo to all, Chili

Adias, great idea on the u tude thing. a super way to get your view of moving footage of the construction. I just went to u tube this morning to check it out. A definite possiblity
Andrew, I have been told the keys will be turned over to me on April 23, 2007. Thats the date that my contract calls for a completion date. But we all know what it says and what we get are not always the same thing. I'm toying with the idea of moving on the property 3 months before completion. But talking my other half into this is proving to be a formidable task. She doesn't like the thought of "roughing it" one bit. Then there is my son's school to consider. He would need to be transferred during the school year that's in session and that is always a little tramatic for a seven year old. You know, having to leave their friends, not graduating with their class they have attended most of the year, those sort of things.
But we will see. The money that could be saved by not paying rent for 3 months is in the thousands. That would help buy needed things for the house, like a refridgerater, drapes, extra bed, well the list goes on but you get the idea. I'll have a better handle on moving in after I see how much we're hurting after Christmas. Ouch.
