PO Box in Hilo - lotus - 09-02-2007

Is it possible to get a mailbox in Hilo before you live there? We're finally moving out in October, but we're not sure how to forward our mail.

We used Camero's Mail & Ship in Keaau because it was convenient for us. Handled everything over phone and fax. There is also 1 Stop Mail & Ship in Pahoa. The waiting lists at most post offices are endless.

The Hilo airport (main) Post Office normally does have boxes with very little wait. When we moved 2 years ago, no post office would allow you to get a box without residency (security stuff). However, we forwarded our mail to:
'-recipients name-'
'General Delivery'
'Hilo, HI 96720'
If you use a mail service, there are some limitations with forwarding.
The rules of establishing PO boxes may have changed, just check with your local post office.
On island, there are many people that permanently get their mail at 'General Delivery' It is also easy to then forward to a PO Box (when you get one) or a street address (yes there are some areas with home delivery)
General delivery takes some time, as you get your mail at the counter, but we met a lot of people, some of whom became friends, in the mail line....heck these are your new neighbors!
If you want General Delivery at another Post Office in Puna, the zip codes are:
Keaau - 96749
Mountain View - 96771
Pahoa - 96778
Volcano - 96785

We moved to HPP two years ago from Alaska and we did get a P.O. Box in Hilo before we got there. We just "wrote" the Hilo Post office and told them that we will be moving here in approx 2 weeks and we would like to give our mainland post office an address to foward our mail. But we already had a home and a physical address here in puna which made the difference .

RE: PO Box in Hilo - missydog1 - 09-03-2007

I did this about a month ago when I was between addresses.

There is or was about a two week wait for a P.O. Box at Hilo airport post office, so because of that they will only forward FROM Gen Del for 30 days, instead of the normal six months.

If you put yourself on the waiting list for a box, they will send you a notice when one is available.

They didn't ask me about residency, but then they could tell I lived on the island. They knew I wasn't staying in Hilo though, and didn't care about that.

I recommend you call the Hilo post office. You can get the local number through the national 800 number if you have the patience to put up with the annoying menu. ;-)

lotus we have a Hilo box and have had it for over a year. Don't live there yet but a friend has our key and keeps the box free of debris, if you know what I mean!

I was able to get a PO Box at the Waianuenue post office with no wait late last year.
