A Balinese House, from Bali? - Rob L - 07-12-2007
I'm living in Indonesia now. Costs are really low here and there are places on Bali that will build you a house and take it apart so that it can be easily put back together. I figure that it would never get past code in Hawai'i, but what if I built a small house that had a kitchen and bathroom up to code and used the Balinese house as sort of a "pavilion" where I could have the living room and sleeping area? Anyone heard of such a thing?

Rob, they do meet code, and some have been built here. Check out www.hawaiiinformation.com MLS#197556 Leilani & MLS#188968 Kehena. Buying there and having it shipped would be a big cost saving.

aloha rob,
have you visited some of the more reputable builders their that do quality work? i'm just starting to investigate this process and would like to eventually go their to work with a reputable company that is established and may have design/cad capabilities....shipping is expensive but alot cheaper than buying local woods on the island.
Thanks for any info on companies or websites you can provide to help in the effort.

Just remember that anything you want to build here needs to have plans that are stamped by a Hawaii architect. And I can tell you from personal experience that the building department here does not always accept what an architect approves and signs off on.

Funny aside. We brought our nephew who lives in Bali (he's indonesian)to the Big Island. He thought it to be a much more beautiful place than Bali!

Question for Rob Tucker...
Is it possible to create a home like this Bail/Dutch Colonial using CastleBlock's modern materials?
I realize that his will require a good architect and custom construction. HPM does not offer this model, to be sure!

Sure, this Bali/Dutch Colonial would work well with our materials. It can be built to last a few centuries without
excessive expense.

This is good to know! We'd rather use modern, eco-friendly materials than wood harvested from Indonesia's rain forests.

Buzz, we have been doing business in Bali and Java for years and know about this program. It is better than nothing, but cutting down mature forests and replacing them with seedlings isn't the best approach. So much damage has been done to the rain forests. We're also concerned about the loss of farming land as more and more foreigners buy up (technically it's a leasehold arrangement) land for development on the island of spirits. I worry about what Bali will be like in a few decades.
That said, there is apparently a company based in Keaau that does Bali style homes. Here is the link (I know nothing about the company):
