No, the Ohia posts were not in place when we visited, but I did see some of the pictures you posted. Looked great!

We had the bark stripped off with a power washer. You can then follow up with sanding once the log is dry.

BTW, I was also told to stand the logs on one end to facilitate the removal of moisture.

Our Dear PamL has stripping experience...

The logs we got from Jeff were already stripped, he uses a power washer. Sophie spent a couple days sanding, still a lot of work. We will finish with an oil finish (forget the brand) as it is more natural looking and we've been told the hard coatings eventually flake and peel, meaning you need to sand again to refinish and look ok.

We have a friend who says he uses a drawknife to strip the bark. Sounds very labor intensive but a lot quieter than a powerwasher. He also said the stripping should be done shortly after felling.

I'll put in my two cents...

If you strip them within the same day you fell the tree, you can power wash it or scrape with the tip of a shovel and most of the bark comes right off... takes minutes only for each tree. If you wait the draw knife is very effective and takes maybe an hour or two. Then you let them dry for a while... weeks to months... and then you sand. It's not that bad. We did 18 of them. Smile

YOu shoulda brought this up at Scuba Sunday! ALso, are you the ones who posted abut needing a trailer? You looking to buy one or just need to use one? Several of us have them and we try to share....

Oh, and Dave... how much did you end up paying for your posts? I am curious as to their value... I got mine on such a deal three years ago.... doesn't compare with now.

Hey Pam

There was a formula - $per inch per foot I think, but I don't remember the details. I paid $180 for the ones you saw - $10/ft. Jeff was gracious in his measurements. We actually got a 20 footer cut in 2 so we'd be able to trim.
