Tankless Water Heaters? Propane service? - Rumi in Hawaii - 11-08-2007 Anyone want to offer their experiences or brand preferences for tankless water heaters? We looked at one today at Hilo Propane, a Bosch for $750. Have also seen them at Home Depot for $1200. We only have a 1-bedroom, 1-bath small house so don't need anything super-dooper. I had an Aquastar about 8 years ago and loved it, but don't know the new technology, or prices. Also have figured out that it's best to buy one or more small tanks (hey, we don't want to haul around a 200 lb. tank...), but does anyone recommend a place to buy the smaller propane tanks? Thinking of around 30-50 lb. tanks.... any advice? Tanks.... ;>) Katie A Wherever you go, there you are. RE: Tankless Water Heaters? Propane service? - pslamont - 11-08-2007 Best prices I found so far are at Costco for the smaller tanks.... up to 11 gallon I think. Pam Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! Propane service? - Green - 11-08-2007 I think we paid $425 for a new pulermo tanklesss water heater there RE: Tankless Water Heaters? Propane service? - loffelkopffl - 11-09-2007 been using an aquastar for ten years now, only had to replace the jet tip once($10) put one in my sister in laws' house about two years ago, no problems yet, got it at home depot about $550 RE: Tankless Water Heaters? Propane service? - loffelkopffl - 11-09-2007 didn't bosch buy aquastar? RE: Tankless Water Heaters? Propane service? - Kapohocat - 11-09-2007 Tell me your experience with the tankless heaters. My experience is that on catchment - they dont work well because of the pressure tank issue. Or at least ours never did. How did you solve it? Propane service? - Rumi in Hawaii - 11-09-2007 Hey, thanks for all the info! Here's some info my sweetie, David, has to answer Kat's question about catchment and tankless heaters: You need a big enough pump to push water thru the filtration system, and that should help with pressure for the water heater, too. You need to set your pressure switch on your pump to maintain pressure in your pressure tank...minimum 30 psi and maximum 50 psi. Tankless heaters require a flow of at least a half a gallon a minute before they will light. We stayed at a VRBO for a couple weeks when we first got here this time, and they had a Paloma and we found out that if you didn't run the water hard enough, that the hot water would taper off and you'd end up with cold water. My previous experience with the Aquastar 8 years ago was not on catchment so can't comment on that myself. David also says that any time you have a pressure pump rather than city water, you have more fluctuations in the pressure. This can be remedied somewhat by adjusting the cut-in and cut-off set points on your pressure switch. Wherever you go, there you are. RE: Tankless Water Heaters? Propane service? - leilaniguy - 11-09-2007 I bought a Bosch from Pahoa Propane a few months ago for $500. They told me Bosch bought out Aquastar, now made in Germany, not France. Using a flash heater takes some getting used to, you have to turn on the hot water first, then slowly turn on the cold 'til it's the right temp. RE: Tankless Water Heaters? Propane service? - Royall - 11-09-2007 We've used the Takagi jr for the last year. Bought it at Pahoa Battery for about 750.00. We are on catchment and have had no problems with it. I don't have an air tank on our water system and the whole thing works like we were on a street water main and a regular hotwater tank. Would buy another if this one dies.
