Info on concrete - Dot - 01-05-2008 Aloha, any referrals for concrete for a 2 car carport and post/pier 900 sq. ft house? We are thinking about building the forms and installing the steel ourselves and then have it poured/finished. We're coming over in March to do an owner-builder house, I have to do all the paperwork and my husband and crew does the labor, somehow I'm thinking I have the harder part! I've read a lot of the colorful stories about owner-builder......this should be interesting to say the least. In case anyone is longing for colder temps, it's about 10 degrees here in Alaska......wishing I was in Puna! Dot RE: Info on concrete - Rob Tucker - 01-05-2008 I have had and seen very good, consistant result from Eric Ahu (982-9614). Too many times I have witnessed projects where "friends" were going to help with / take care of the concrete work and finishing. There are a lot of people about who claim to know what they are doing. The simple rule of thumb I apply (to concrete) is: If they have to rent their floats and tools they don't know their stuff. A concrete finisher will have his own equipment and know how to use it. Secondly, it is often a mistake to have too few people. Too much work for too few people means a bad product. Concrete is quite permanent. Bring sufficient crew to the task RE: Info on concrete - Dot - 01-05-2008 Thank you very much for the referral, I will give him a call. This website has been a great source of information! RE: Info on concrete - janeadams - 01-06-2008 Dot, On Rob's recommendation, we had Eric pour our slab in early 2005. He was highly professional, careful, and did a great job of smoothing the slab for an acid wash stain. despite a spate of rain that made it difficult. Can't go wrong with his quality of work! Jane RE: Info on concrete - Kapohocat - 01-06-2008 quote: I second that. As SB can attest to concrete tools are expensive but each finisher worth his time has his finish tools. SB has the bull float for the guys to use. And heaven help the laborer who doesnt clean it up at the end! Can you say "need a new job"? The other thing I suggest is dont try to save money by not having on site a power trowl (aka "bird"). Even if you are going for a "broom" finish for say a driveway - if that concrete starts going off (and not enough guys/too warm a day / too dry a mix) the bird can save the day. Oh yah and you dont actually use a real broom - it is a tool that has a fringed broom like edge. RE: Info on concrete - Kahunascott - 01-07-2008 Don't over look Kat's man SB. He did a great job at my house and I would use him agian in a minute. I called Eric, but have not heard back. Much thanks Craig RE: Info on concrete - Rob Tucker - 01-15-2008 Apparently Eric has a new phone number. I changed it in my post above. The correct home number is now 982-9614. RE: Info on concrete - weagant - 01-15-2008 Thanks Rob, I'll try again. Craig RE: Info on concrete - Beachboy - 01-15-2008 quote: it's nice to have a god recommendation for concrete work. Unfortunately I'm a victim of terrible concrete work. My garage is terrible looking! The workers never used that one tool that cleans up edges. So all around my garage slab edges look like somebody took a sledgehammer to it!. Not to mention these ass wipes weren't very careful it either. I have spilled paint all over it, and even a small piece of wood embedded in the concrete. Walkway up to the front door floods when it rains. As a matter of fact, I'm considering a lawsuit against my real estate agent and her contractor who she has collaborated with on several homes...with mine being the worst! Unfortunately, this real estate agent mistook my kindness as a weakness! As a Waikiki Beachboy, my nickname was "Hit-man" for a reason, and they are about to find out why! As a matter of fact, slab was such a terrible job it is probably the reason that I have to deal with centipedes in my house on a weekly basis..and you know what? It really pisses me off! Plus for every good story about craftmanship here in Puna, there will be 5 nightmares about people getting ripped off by phoney contractors;' In my case, I think I have action. I have come to find out my agent's business partner is in fact not a contractor at all, but is using a contractor's license. Plus they moved me into a house that wasn't completed?! I think I have them by the short hairs...what do you guys think? Handle every situation like a dog,If you can't eat it or hump it,piss on it and walk away... |
