Yah his company was the HNL paper last summer - I thought what a perfect idea for the low spots in Kapoho. I didnt get much further than that because DOH wants aerobic and for whatever reason isnt really considering this system better.

They (Nagatos) don't have a good web page yet, but it sounds like one of the septics would cost 12,000$ or better. No real hint of how they work, but it looks sucessfull!

Where an aerator can be had for around 1,000$ and use an existing septic tank. Kapoho shouldn't have any cesspools!

I am with you 110% gtill!

And this Nagata system seems to be able to treat the effluent water from a septic to a point of secondary, ok I guess for landscape watering, how about fruit trees? Not having a leachfield would be a major benefit on my side (volcano). I'd like to drill a 20' deepx3" hole as an injection well for my effluent from a regular septic. The county however would never put up with this, but will let a cesspool rip a stone throw from the ocean! The same with houses here on NS Oahu, million dollar homes on the ocean, with cesspools, change over is only necessary when sold!

I don't think the County (State) is so lenient on them (cesspools) anymore.

Last year, the EPA declared that all existing major cesspools had to be replaced with alternative systems such as Nagato's in order to preserve Hawaii's limited supply of ground water.

Right, but I belive the word is major, meaning public parks, ball fields, cafeterias etc, both public and private!

However except for time of sale I haven't heard of any requirments forcing near ocean dwellings or any private homes to convert!

I would like to know how much maintenance is needed with the Nagato unit, and does it incorporate UV lights to achive the effluent purity?

"Major" is not the correct term -- the right term is "large-capacity" cesspools and you can be affected by the "large-capacity" cellpool conversion rules anytime there is more than one house connected to a single cesspool (these are also known as "gang cesspools"). So its not just the places like ballfields, parks, etc being affected.

As for conversion of existing near-ocean cesspools at single-family homes, you are correct in that it is not currently mandated by law to convert. New construction in near-ocean areas has already had the rules changed, and no new cesspools are allowed in those areas. And most places with any ocean-connection (such as many of the tidepools on private property in Vacationland) are required to go to a higher standard on new construction -- an aerobic septic system.

It ain't perfect, but its a step in the right direction.

mahalo a nui everyone! the reasons i was asking is because i kept that article from the honolulu advertiser and couldn't find a website or listing in the yellow or white pages online. the article said that the system was between 25-30k. if it has gone down to app. 12k, that would be better. the article also said that the EPA and DOH approved nagato's system.
