Is pressure treated wood available in puna? - emorata - 05-23-2008 aloha all, quick question, i'm bringing over a container with personal effects, is it worth brining in over some pressure treated wood and other woods? any other building materials that i should consider that is not available or too expensive in puna area? thanks for the heads up. noel RE: Is pressure treated wood available in puna? - Carey - 05-23-2008 Noel, treated lumber here is ONLY borate treated, not ACQ or other exterior treatments... the borate treatment is for termites & such, but is for weather protected use only. All cuts & penetrations must be treated with borate at site 1. to comply with manufacturers rec. for warranty & 2.to have any chance of the wood withstanding termites. (there is a good article that does question whether the leaching is as bad, but #1 is still there... link: http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/how-to/articles/new-pressure-treated-wood-decks.aspx) There is no wood avaiable on island labeled for exterior, weather exposed applications.... (composite decking materials are available... but nothing structural that we have found..) SOOOO.... if you want to build a weather exposed wood structure, you will need to bring wood treated to withstand weather exposure.... Plus all of the approved fasteners (I'm not sure if they sell the new stuff here) You could probably sell any leftovers... I know we are having the dickens of a time trying to figure out future plans for lanai posts that will not be consummed by the voracious appetites of the termites! Does this note mean you are post-haste here? (notice you didn't come for a visit last weekend so we must have a re-celebration when you get here RE: Is pressure treated wood available in puna? - Kapohocat - 05-24-2008 Argus had some ACQ. RE: Is pressure treated wood available in puna? - Carey - 05-24-2008 Cat, That is great news, I know last year we couldn't find it, checked EVERYONE! (we got many of our windows from Argus...siding from Honsador, doors from HD, soffit from Piersen.... you really do have to travel the circuit...) Do you know if they also sell the approved fasteners for the ACQ (the treatment really does a number on 'normal' exterior screws & bolts & such...)??? ED: Hubby checked, they only carry 2X stock in ACQ, and no approved fasteners (the ACQ has a very high copper content, & can quickly cause galvanic corrosion on 'normal' fasteners.... we had deck screws fail in a couple of years on our last house....) Still looking for treated posts (or will finally break down and get those $$$ & Georgian fiberglass ones ;~) RE: Is pressure treated wood available in puna? - Kapohocat - 05-24-2008 quote: I believe any of the fasteners treated with zinc or they may be shown as Z-Max will work. ACQ and metal are just not friends.
