Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - Kelena - 09-18-2008 My house is monitored by Alert Alarm.. I asked Alert Alarm about installing a camera system, but they wanted an amount so high that I must warn you, seeing it in print might adversely affect your heart. Here it comes: $7,000!?!! --yeah right!. I recall a thread where someone installed a camera system, but with the search function down, I can’t find it. What I would like to do is install an exterior camera system that permits me to monitor the house remotely on the internet, partly for enhanced security and partly because I want to be virtually there since I am actually not there (and someone else is). Anyone know of such a thing? How would it connect to the internet? Would I have to have a COMPUTER in the house somewhere, or could I get by with a router or something? Does anyone install these things? RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - Tolleys - 09-18-2008 Glen, I do not know much about this subject, but I too am interested. $7,000 is just wrong! I found this 2006 short article on wireless security systems which you might find helpful. Not sure how you network to CA, but I am sure there is a way... It must be similar to the web cams out on the internet like the Hilo Bay cam which I viewed often before we moved to the island. Article: http://www.video-surveillance-guide.com/wireless-surveillance-systems.htm Hilo Bay webcam: http://www.tsunami.org/hilobaycam.html Susan RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - Bullwinkle - 09-18-2008 have a look at x10 dot com they sell lots of this stuff. I do not think the quality is the best ... although they have some good quality items at a price. They also sell some items that will interface with some alarm panels as well - remote lighting kits etc RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - EightFingers - 09-18-2008 x10 has some really cool stuff and I have bought from them before (light controls, etc). They are fast shipping to you, also. ***BUT*** You will get several emails a day from them forever! RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - Scott_S - 09-18-2008 If you have internet at your house all you need is a ip camera that you just plug into your network hub or router. Something like this one, but there are others. You don't need to have a computer on but you would need a wireless router connected to the internet. http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Wireless-Internet-Camera-Audio/dp/B000I2JBC8/ref=tag_tdp_sv_edpp_t Scott RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - StillHope - 09-18-2008 Glen, here's the link for the thread (Big Island's post) http://punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5490&whichpage=2 and the product he was using; http://www.wilife.com/Default.aspx RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - Kelena - 09-18-2008 Susan -- I had to ask the representative twice because I couldn't believe what she was telling me. Your house looks gorgeous in the plans. Are you finished? Bullwinkle and Eight -- wow that x10 dot com site is very helpful if you can get past the assault on the sensee! Some pretty reasonable stuff. Thanks. Scott -- that's just the info I was looking for. Don't want to buy a computer to leave there --one that connects with a router is perfect. Thanks. SH: Thanks again for finding the old thread. RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - lostboystoy - 09-19-2008 hey Glen I bought a 4 camera set up, on e-bay, hooks up to your computer, and can be monitored on the Internet, I only paid 200 dollars for it, I would recommend upgrading to a better megapixel camera than the ones I have. But I have them in my Hair salon and at my home, And can monitor them from the web. and everything gets recorded on your hard drive, their is an option that you can buy, to have extra storage for the data on line. Don't buy in to the 7000 dollar hype. You can do it a lot cheaper. just go to e-bay and type in surveillance systems in the search engine. good luck. setting my soul free.... RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - lostboystoy - 09-19-2008 p.s Glen it happened to be the same system that our local sheriffs office uses, didn't know until I had to call them on some kids tagging my building. and the sheriff was surprised that it was the same system they used. setting my soul free.... RE: Remote Camera Viewing System via Internet - Tolleys - 09-19-2008 Glen, Not sure what you mean by your "representative"? But our house is NOT done. Much still to do! Our contractor is almost done with the drywall. Then the rest is up to Scott and I until final plumbing and electrical! We are the paint guys, tile guys, trim (inside and outside) guys, kitchen installation guys etc... Actually, it will be nice not to have contractors around! Quality has been our biggest challenge with our contractors. Thanks for asking... Susan |
