Electric VS Propane - DickWilson - 09-28-2008
As we get closer to building, We need to determine which is most cost effective. I know how expensive electric is, don't have a good feel for propane. How much a gallon, is home delivery to a large residential tank available. HELP!

We chose propane for cooking. So far 4gal of propane has lasted 5 weeks for my wife and I. This is just for cooking, we have not switched out the water heater yet but plan to soon.

After asking questions on this forum I decided to have a propane stove and on-demand water heater (gas).
Would have had Solahart instead,but not eligible for about %65 tax deduction (state and federal).

Thanx, StillHope & Jon; thats what I'm looking for information wise. Plan on using propane for range, H2O htr, dryer. But don't know if residential delivery is available to an on site tank.

Dick,not totally off topic - I am thinking of getting a Honda generator which is quiet and might be enough for my needs.
I think it costs a couple thousands,but with the electricity price will pay for itself in a year (?)

I have a 6KW for backup, planing on solar panels to offset Helco. But gas is so much more efficient for any application involving heat that I really would like to go with propane assuming I don't have to pack 5 gal tanks around.

We chose to haul it ourselves, but we were told delivery is available in most if not all of the "neighborhoods" in Puna.
At the current rate of use, we will have fill up a 30gal tank about once every 6 months or so.

We have two 100# tanks. Each one last about 4-5 months and is on an automatic switch over valve. When one is empty I just put it in the trailer and go up to Pahoa and get it filled. It maybe a different story as I get older manhandling a 23 gallon tank of propane.
I'm glad we went with gas though..... The gas dryer alone is more efficient than electric and the gas hot water on demand works great. The only thing I would do different is cooking.... Gas range is nice but electric oven with broiler is a better set up.

We are thinking of a double built in oven and separate range. Kathy bakes lots of cakes and bread, so I think we'll end up with elec. oven and gas range. Thanks for the heads up everyone on the rate of consumption, helps immensely with planing.
