Police Commision Meeting? - rasman - 11-18-2008

Aloha,
Just wondering if anyone is planning on attending the Police Commision Public Meeting Tonight Tuesday, Nov. 17th @ the Aupuni Center Coference Room. This meeting is to give the public a chance to review the two candidates for the new police chief position.
I don't have the start time of the meeting in front of me. I know that this is an important changing of the guard though as Chief Mahuna is determined to run things the "good ol' boy way" regardless of public will or county ordinance. Hope some of you can make it. I will certainly try to be there. Shame though that we don't get to vote in the new chief, that's left up to the Police Commission I believe. Who elects the Police Commission members?

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. this evening. The more members of the public show up this evening, the better it would be.

The police commissioners are appointed by the mayor. They are generally seen as rubber stamps for the police chief. Two well-known previous commissioners resigned their posts in frustration at trying to get their fellow commissioners to act independently of the police department and offer true citizen oversight, including Paul deSilva, a former judge and county prosecutor.

This is a very important issue and meeting. Unfortunately I am leaving for Texas this afternoon, or I would be there. The lack of a fully independent police review mechanism is a black eye on the integrity of law enforcement in Hawaii County. Frankie is absolutely right about the "rubber stamp" nature of the current Commission.

Cheers,
Jerry
