Orchid Tree - PunaCat - 06-03-2006 Wow. What a beautiful plant! Every time I drive past the N & S Kulani intersection on my way into town, I nearly careen right off the road - there is a gorgeous hedge of this plant along the left side.... I finally found someone to tell me what it is. Dare I ask?? Would anyone be willing to share a cutting with me? Tell me how to propigate it? Tell me where I can buy one of my very own?? Mahalo! PunaCat RE: Orchid Tree - leilaniguy - 06-03-2006 Aloha Punacat, I have one, but have never gotten a cutting to grow in spite of several tries. I got it at Rozettes in HPP. (it's also called Bauhinia) RE: Orchid Tree - JerryCarr - 06-03-2006 Aloha! These guys are wonderful. They seem to grow in sun or partial shade, and mine has been very fast growing. I got it at the Makuu Market from one of the vendors in the back row. I have also tried unsuccessfully to root cuttings. Must be hard to propagate that way. Cheers, Jerry. RE: Orchid Tree - PunaCat - 06-04-2006 I was talking to a neighbor yesterday, and she tells me the secret to rooting the cutting is to let it dry out - like you would for a cactus or succulent. Let the wound scar over - then put it in the rooting medium. I haven't been down to Rozettes yet - it looks wonderful. I'm sure I'd get in so much trouble there.... Where can I find palms at a good price? I've been pretty successful finding good buys on orchids, ti plants and anthiriums at the Hilo Farmers' Mkt, but it's hit or miss - and I haven't seen any palms. PunCat RE: Orchid Tree - leilaniguy - 06-04-2006 There's the "palm guy", don't know his name, that parks in the Sacred Heart church parking lot in Pahoa every Sat. from 8 AM 'til about 2 PM, advertizes "1 gal. palms $5 ea. 5 trees for $20. Has several types. Edited by - leilaniguy on 06/07/2006 10:24:49 RE: Orchid Tree - PunaCat - 06-05-2006 Mahalo!!! Carey, I'd love to have some of those bush palms, when you get around to thinning them out - I would sooo appreciate it! I'd like to give a try with the seeds as well - And I will head on down to Pahoa to check out the palm guy, too. Thanks so much - I appreciate it. Cat RE: Orchid Tree - JerryCarr - 06-05-2006 Aloha all. There is a really nice lady who sells palms at very reasonable prices in HPP. Drive makai on Paradise, then go right at 6th, and she is the second or third house on the left. There are signs to help find her. I can't seem to find her phone number, or I would include it. RE: Orchid Tree - PunaCat - 06-09-2006 Thanks, Jerry - Does she have certain hours she is open, or could I just drive by?? I appreciate all the help - I'm having such a good time stting up the yard, planting this and that. (Trying not to get in too much trouble....) RE: Orchid Tree - Lee G - 06-11-2006 Cat, I was at the Garden exchange in Hilo yesterday(Sat) and they had a Hong Kong Orchid tree for sale with purple blooms for about $30.00 Lee RE: Orchid Tree - PunaCat - 06-18-2006 Thanks Lee - one of these days real soon, I'll get down to the Garden Exchange. Seems like I've been doing a lot of running around these last few weeks, and I just haven't had time to run in. I did, however, get down to the Maku Market this morning. Ever see a crazy woman trying to stuff a 20' helaconia in a Jetta wagon? Oh, it was a sight to behold. So glad I could make a couple people laugh! I had so much fun down there - and did find an orchid tree. Only it is a new hybrid, not the old fashion one I really want. She also had small orange ones, which of course, for $6, I had to have.... So I'm still holding out for the right one! Maybe next week. Or maybe, I should just head down to the G.E. like Lee suggested. PunaCat |
