What are these vines that climb the trees with leaves as big as a kitchen sink ?
They look very "jungley" , which we like - and have thought about transplanting some to our lot in Leilani.
Are they native? Invasive ? They seem to be like ivy on the mainland - they would probably choke and kill a tree.

It's Devils Ivy, Epipremnum Aureum or Pothos. It's from S.E. Asia. Don't plant it! It grows huge, makes the trees top heavy and dangerous, also aggressive/invasive. It is all around my neighborhood (Hapuu St.)

Try planting some monstera aka "swiss cheese plant". It isn't as invasive and is even more jungly looking. It will either grow as a ground cover on slopes or up a handy tree stem. It has huge leaves with holes in them and you can get them either all dark green or there is a white and green varigated version. It is pretty easy to start from cuttings.

I think I saw some at walmart but it seems to grow wild lots of places at least here in tiki gardens.

I have lots of monstera, it has a flavor that is a combination of pineapple and banana when ripe. Unripe , it has oxylic acid crystals, kind of like eating burning fibreglass,(be careful). It isn't as agressive as Pothos and has a tendancy to snap off, prune itself, 30', 40' up the trees. I have a neighborhood friend who makes part of her living from harvesting the new leaves for background florists foliage @ $1 each leaf.

PLEASE PLEASE be very careful with monstera. The sap of the plant also contains the acid crystals and will cause a burning, itchy rash. I got into it when we were trimming it and it has taken numerous doctors and solutions to get it close to clearing up. Once it gets into the skin it becomes systemic quickly. The acid sets off a histamine reaction in the skin. That said it is probably like poison oak, some people are very allergic and some not. I avoid it like the plague now.

Another one to avoid is heartleaf or velvet philodendron vine. My neighbor pulled some and immediately broke out with contact dermatitis, turned red as a beet, said it felt like a really bad sunburn. Took a week to get over, even taking benadryl. She had handled it many times over the past 25 years with no ill effects, then it suddenly got her.
