Jacaranda in Puna? - olin137 - 04-27-2007

Anyone know if Jacaranda trees will grow in Puna? I've seen them on the Kona side and Waimea, but can't recall seeing any on the east side. Thanks.

Jacaranda trees do grow on the hilo side....but flower blossoms are not as abundant as they are on the kona side. They don't seem to like heavy rain and strong winds. There is a jacaranda tree in Keaau town at the junction of HWy 11 (in front of the Shipman Office building). I believe there are also some Jacaranda tree's right along HYW 11 in Kurtistown. I have one on my property in Paradise park on 5th street but its struggling with not many leaves or branches.

There is a huge jacaranda tree over Suisan. It is gorgeous when it is blooming and all purple colored. Mixing jacaranda with silky oak is nice since the jacarandas are that lovely lavender color and the silk oak has an ocher yellow color that coordinates well with the lavender. They also bloom at the same time.

A nice combination would be jacaranda and pink ginger or even the wild pink grass that grows everywhere in puna.
