Green Waste - Kea'au? - Carolann R - 05-19-2007

I checked on the Hawaii waste management site and it says that Kea'au allows green waste drop off for no fees...anyone know if that's not true? (I like to check...sometimes the websites aren't always "up to the minute" LOL!)

We're gonna need to haul some green stuff but don't wanna go all the way to Hilo to do it...

Yes, the Kea'au Transfer Station/Recycling takes green recycling. The bins are in the center of the loop on your left as you approach the garage sale/recycling area. You can't dump stuff in plastic bags or boxes, only the plant materials. It's where the computer/electronics recycling drop off used to be. It appears that they are building a better dumpsite for the green recycling with a paved area above the area where the bins will be. This will be much nicer than having to heave stuff up over the edge of the bins.

Since there's so little dirt in the Puna area, instead of hauling all the green waste away, pile it up into a big pile and let it rot. Compost is way wonderful stuff and you will not only have beautiful compost, but you will be keeping our landfills from overflowing. Piling it all into a compost heap also saves the effort of trucking it away somewhere, but I guess I'm just lazy.

We have a trench of sorts at the rear of our property which we have really utilized a great deal...we were considering the green waste thing but after talking to a neighbor and since we have a lot next to us that is empty...we're gonna place it all there...it's all green (I took down a huge Noni) so no pollution on someone else's property...I don't think they would mind (and maybe it will be ours in a couple years)...

I have been to the Hilo compost dump area and we took a truckload home for our plants once...I think it's a wonderful thing they do that we have access to that kinda stuff for free...all those nitrates...

Oh yeah - yes, it was a HUGE Noni, but I offered the fruits several times to people and no one took me up on it, so...
