Best areas for a tropical garden - puna_bound - 05-30-2007 As you may have guessed from my other post, we're in the land buying stage. Considering Hawaii Shores Rec. Estates, HPP, and Orchidland the most. My dream is a retirement home with lots of tropical fruit tree and big veggie garden. Is there anything I need to know before buying, other than the obvious things such as don't buy a lava flow covered lot? Where do your gardens grow? Jimmy RE: Best areas for a tropical garden - puna_bound - 05-30-2007 What communities/areas have the best, deepest soil in Puna? If I don't want to live (and try to garden) on hard rock, what's the best bet? I'm guessing it comes from the north side of the island and isn't sand! Jimmy RE: Best areas for a tropical garden - Carolann R - 06-02-2007 You can get manure for free up in Hawi, but you'll pay $100 an hour for a trucker to haul it. P.S. - Carey - I LOVE that map. It's amazing. Takes a little studying to "get it," but wow, what a lot of work that was! I had a huge truckload of cinder-soil (small cinders mixed with some dirt) delivered for about $350. That was a few years ago, though. If things go as planned I'll have a lot for manure and such in about 6 weeks. Jimmy RE: Best areas for a tropical garden - jdirgo - 06-03-2007 I've seen people taking the Wailoa dredge sand, but I don't know if its officially OK to do so. I would wonder how good it is, however, being all salty and such.
