chickens - Nalu - 06-16-2007 Hi everyone, I just got my first set of baby chicks yesterday. They are on medicated feed that is supposed to help build up immunity to Coccidiosis. My question is one of them has rather foamy poo and I read that it is often worms. Can I give a wormer to chicks this little? (4 days old) and if so what do I give them? Hoping someone out there has some experience with this. Mahalo! Angela RE: chickens - leilaniguy - 06-16-2007 I haven't had chickens in several years, but I always started them on piperazine from day 1 and added it to their water on a regular basis. RE: chickens - Nalu - 06-16-2007 Thanks Leilani Guy, I had heard of that somewhere. I called Pahoa Feed where I got the chicks and he said he thought I should wait until they were a month old but he was unsure. He thought they were vaccinated/dewormed from the hatchery but again unsure. I think I will go down to Miranda's on Monday, they seem to know their stuff. I'm a newbie to all this stuff, but it sure is fun. Angela RE: chickens - Shekelpal - 06-17-2007 Have had free range chickens for years and never given them stuff like that. Occasionally a chicken will get sick, usually a rooster, but never had any problems with letting the momas raise their chicks. Sometimes the youngest chick will not make it but the hens do a great job. RE: chickens - Nalu - 06-18-2007 Thanks Shekelpal. I think maybe I'm just a worried new mommy. It is my hope to have them freerange too when they're big enough. We do have a fenced in yard. Angela RE: chickens - tada - 06-18-2007 I've had chickens too so what I notice chickens vulnerable to the elements. On Leeward Oahu here that means wintertime when it's cold dark and rainy though I'm not sure if my chicken succomb directly due to the weather or something she caught because of the weather. Of course if they are chicks gotta watch for those mongoose and cats. Others want to make friends- I just want to make money. James Cramer RE: chickens - scuba_man7 - 06-29-2007 Nalu - how are the kids? RE: chickens - Nalu - 06-29-2007 Hi Scuba-Man, The chicks are doing great. They are just a few days over 2 weeks now, and getting big really fast. In another 2 weeks I'll put them out in the coop. It's been a fun learning process. Makes me want to get more animals. Next will be ducks, then when we can clear the waiwi out of the back acre I'd like to get milking goats. Aloha, Angela RE: chickens - scuba_man7 - 06-30-2007 That's great news. How many chicks did you get? That is going to be so much fun to get that first batch of eggs. RE: chickens - Nalu - 06-30-2007 We got 5 chicks, although now I wish I had gotten more. If one of them ends up being a rooster I may end up keeping him to make more baby chicks. Do you have chickens? Angela |
