gardening in Puna - Green - 07-02-2007

What vegetables, herbs, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. are folks having success at growing? Is there a specfic type of soil suited for these gardens?

When we were in Fern Acres, I had a truckload of cinder-soil hauled in that I used for planting. I had good success with cherry tomatoes (not the standard kind for some reason). Peppers did amazing. Okra did OK, but tended to "bolt" as did lettuce. Potatoes did alright. All of the herbs did pretty well.
