Almost - well, yard work? - morganlady - 07-24-2007

I know that, being in a rainforest, the wild plants move in quickly on a freshly cleared area, but how does a grassy area act in Puna? I last saw my house in May, and I'm wondering if the grass in the yard is waist high? Will I need a bushhog before I can walk in the back yard? Machete?
I'm thinking of looking for a reel-type lawn mower - does anyone still use them? Will it be enough to control the small yard that isn't already taller plants? There are coconut palms, pineapples, thimbleberries, avocado trees, tall tropical plants, and bromiliads so I have food sources ("I'm farming!"Wink on a 8,000 sq ft lot with a house and carport (~1500 sq ft roofed).
Too bad no one sells a plant retardant - to slow growth, not kill or fertilize it, eh?
